User ID: 77314858 United States 01/24/2019 11:21 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Continuation of another thread of wonderful people with the best ever ideas for practical prepping even for those with little money. Quoting: Pooka We'll also address the issues which may come up about "food stamps" and how to best manage without them, or with reduced amounts, or with partial box of food delivered with partial "food stamps". We address power outage, heating and cooking methods, first aid, we run disaster scenarios to see if we know what to do. This is probably the only prepping thread a person would need right now, whether long-time prepper here to share, or newbie prepper here to learn. Welcome!! Join us and learn and teach and enjoy!! This thread might be a good place for me to put down this idea, OP. While I was sitting on the toilet about ninety minutes ago as of this post I was reading through a Diabetes booklet I have. I was also thinking about the inevitable collapse of American society, and all of Humanity shortly after the collapse of America. I realized that insulin has a definite shelf life. I actually thought the stuff could remain in cold storage for decades and room temperature for months straight. Nope... turns out the stuff is only viable in the best of circumstances for normally less than a month's time. Only the "best of the best" insulin lasts up to close to eighty days in the best of circumstances. This means once the power grid is out, probably for months or years straight, Type 1 Diabetes are going to definitely die within about a month's time. Unless if there are a number of them who happen to have operational generators with the proper maintenance and fuel to last for years or longer and manage to secure a vast amount of insulin all Type 1 Diabetics will die within about a month's time. Type 2 Diabetics on the other hand will have a chance to eat healthier depending on where they're surviving and being willing to eat healthy foodstuff. I could of sworn I heard of a plant in another GLP thread that is a natural form of insulin. If this is true this would be absolutely essential for Type 1 Diabetics to grow as much and often as possible during the later Christian Apocalypse Events. This is the plant; It is sold here alive, or dried to be used for tea. [link to www.ticotimes.net] Welcome here, ladulce! THis is excellent information! And I read below it, as well, to the stevia plant. Easy to grow and is a natural sweetener which we would especially appreciate if surviving on our storage. Many wouldn't want their tea or coffee without sweetener, and here it is. Stick a pot of it on your windowsill or deck or, if fortunate enough to have a garden, put it in the dirt! Stevia is used for birth control in South America. FYI. *** Good deeds bring rewards, bad actions bring troubles. That is a law of the universe. *** |

But all you do is get clean sterilized wide mouth canning jars, add rice, oats, etc, and put it in the oven at 250 for 3 hours. The lids will seal as the jars cool. The oats and rice will be good up to 25 years. No bugs, and pasteurized. But it isn't very portable. Also, a really good and inexpensive supplement to take that packs a bunch of vitamins is spirulina. You can take a skillet, pout a little oil (or shortening) in it. Twist up a few pieces of paper towel for wicks, drop in the oil and light. Poof, you have a burner to cook on. You need to use a skillet/pan with a lid so you can snuff out the fire when y'r done cooking. I believe one of my sisters, the one who went into the Army, over a decade ago, she told the rest of our family how soldiers in the field are supposed to heat up their MREs. There's a chemical mixture that is to mixed together that produces a strong exothermic reaction. Not exactly enough to severely burn a human, but enough to quickly heat up a MRE's contents so you're not eating up to ice cold MREs potentially out in the middle of nowhere. Is this something available to the public? Or is it only in MREs we'd have to get from an Army/Navy store? I once found bags that will heat a can of food - can't even remember where I got them. I'd have to ask my sister on this. We used to have a bunch of MREs at our parents' house many years ago. I don't know what happened to them. Probably eaten by someone long ago. You need to use a skillet/pan with a lid so you can snuff out the fire when y'r done cooking. Sounds like a great idea! Would you need a rack that fits the "burner" pan to hold up another pan to cook in? Why would you do this? Just make a camp fire or wood fire and eliminate all the extra stuff. Oil is costly and not as a cheap and efficient heat source, compared to wood. Practical Prepping means doing it simply and efficiently with the least amount of tools or equipment or supplies. This was more for inside or sheltered use. If outside, yes, wood. Nitrile gloves, and some masks. Those masks they have in hospitals for visitors are just fine. But the gloves are important for sanitation and also in case of serious injury. The masks are little important for filtering potentially dangerous air or keeping germs out of serious injuries. If you can only get one, get a box of nitrile gloves. If you have deal with emptying a bucket toilet, you will want them. I'd have to ask my sister on this. We used to have a bunch of MREs at our parents' house many years ago. I don't know what happened to them. Probably eaten by someone long ago. The "chemical" in the MRE heaters is just iron dust. However, it is NOT iron oxide. When the bag is opened the iron dust begins to oxidize from the oxygen in the air. It is exothermic (gives off heat). The same iron dust is used in hand warmers. On utube they explain how you can use handwarmers as oxygen absorbers for your stored food such as grains. If you go online you can purchase the MRE heaters. However, when I used to backpack, I used those heat tabs that they sell in camping supply stores. They get hot enough to boil water but with no smoke. I would use half a tab in a perforated tuna can under my sierra cup. I made coffee, oatmeal, ramen noodles, and freeze dried entrees all in the same cup. The total weight of my cooking outfit was about 6 ounces. Needless to say, I was striving for ultralight backpacking. BTW, everybody KNOWS that you don't use any flame inside of a tent or closed shelter, right? Carbon monoxide is a killer. You can, however, heat bricks or stones outside on a fire and bring them inside to provide heat without flame. I did that on a backpacking trip where I brought a skillet of hot rocks inside my tent. It was just below zero F and my boots were frozen solid. |

Gallons more! Remember you will need water for flushing as long as you have a toilet to use. You can use water that has been used for sponge bathing, hair washing, dish washing, for flushing. Put a garbage can outside if you live in a rainy area. That water can be used for flushing and washing yourself. If necessary, it can also be purified for drinking, cooking, tooth brushing. Give thought in advance to what you will catch rainwater in, to be certain it is not something that will leach chemicals into the water. DO NOT use a black garbage bag liner - chemicals galore in them. A new or very clean metal garbage can would be perfect! If you have to use a plastic garbage can, as I will, best not to use that water for drinking, even after purifying, because the plastic can leach chemicals into the water. However, that water can be used for flushing, washing oneself and the hair, cleaning. Think water, water, and more water. Far more than you thinkyou will need.
