Oil burns.

You can take a skillet, pout a little oil (or shortening) in it. Twist up a few pieces of paper towel for wicks, drop in the oil and light.

Poof, you have a burner to cook on.

You need to use a skillet/pan with a lid so you can snuff out the fire when y'r done cooking.

I believe one of my sisters, the one who went into the Army, over a decade ago, she told the rest of our family how soldiers in the field are supposed to heat up their MREs. There's a chemical mixture that is to mixed together that produces a strong exothermic reaction. Not exactly enough to severely burn a human, but enough to quickly heat up a MRE's contents so you're not eating up to ice cold MREs potentially out in the middle of nowhere.

Is this something available to the public? Or is it only in MREs we'd have to get from an Army/Navy store?

I once found bags that will heat a can of food - can't even remember where I got them.
