Another thing we should keep in mind is space.
Many people don't have alot of it (think studio apt).
You could easily store food and water for a week and not take up a third of a closet.
Two 7 gallon water containers.
Dry pasta, co co wheats, salt, sugar, chicken bullion cubes, peanutbutter and crackers.

Those with vehicles but small apartments might consider the car as part of your storage. Lots will fit in most trunks, around the spare and the jack and tools and whatever. I always keep a case of water in my car, plus some other goodies, in case of a dry flagger in summer heat, or for my dogs, for me if stuck somewhere.
