Another thing we should keep in mind is space.

Many people don't have alot of it (think studio apt).

You could easily store food and water for a week and not take up a third of a closet.

Two 7 gallon water containers.

Dry pasta, co co wheats, salt, sugar, chicken bullion cubes, peanutbutter and crackers.

I think I paid $12 for 80 lb bags of Pizza or bread flour
 Quoting: Jake

That's an incredible price! How did you store it to keep bugs out?
 Quoting: Pooka

Storing ground flour is almost impossible, it goes rancid so quickly (less than a month). Whole wheat can be stored in a 5 gallon bucket for years if it is nitrogen packed and sealed.

To use the wheat, it can be soaked in water, then "ground" easily in a blender for bread, pancake, cracker making. This system obviates the need for yeast when you get the hang of it.

---------

You are not going to like this :)

Bugs don't get into your flour.

The eggs are already in there and they hatch! :D

I know you didn't want to know that...but it's true.

You wrap the bag of flour in a big plastic bag and put it in the freezer for 3 days (killing all the bug eggs).

Then take it out of the freezer and leave it in the big plastic bag for a day...any condensation forms on the outside of the plastic bag so your flour doesn't end up to be a solid brick.

After a day you can take it out of the big plastic bag.
If I am going to be damned...I am going to be damned for who I really am!

Nice! Maybe a bag of beans, too? Rice and beans together make a complete protein.

On a video earlier they pointed out how easy to make tortillas with a little flour and oil.

I get giant ziploc vacuum bags on the internet

If you add a few bay leaves to a bag, it will keep the bugs out.

You are correct, Mental - some of us have very little space and that makes a big difference.

Those with vehicles but small apartments might consider the car as part of your storage. Lots will fit in most trunks, around the spare and the jack and tools and whatever.

I always keep a case of water in my car, plus some other goodies, in case of a dry flagger in summer heat, or for my dogs, for me if stuck somewhere.

There's a chemical mixture that is to mixed together that produces a strong exothermic reaction. Not exactly enough to severely burn a human, but enough to quickly heat up a MRE's contents

--------

Any idea if those are available to the public?

I asked about that, too, on the first page, I think, because someone mentioned it as working well for MREs. No idea if it is available to us.

It was rude of you to be so dismissive of my post when two other users from your thread previously quoted and agreed with it...

No offense meant wolf...but you were off topic.

This is a prepping thread & prepping for life and/or death are not mutually exclusive.

But let's not get sidetracked...ok?

Continuation of another thread of wonderful people with the best ever ideas for practical prepping even for those with little money.

We'll also address the issues which may come up about "food stamps" and how to best manage without them, or with reduced amounts, or with partial box of food delivered with partial "food stamps".

We address power outage, heating and cooking methods, first aid, we run disaster scenarios to see if we know what to do.

This is probably the only prepping thread a person would need right now, whether long-time prepper here to share, or newbie prepper here to learn.

Welcome!! Join us and learn and teach and enjoy!!

From watching survival shows on TV I have picked up alot of good info...but here's what I've seen as the basics of the basics...

A good knife or machete.
A fire starter (matches or lighter).
Cordage (rope, or cord).
A metal pot to boil water in.

But that is for being out in the middle of nowhere...not in your living room.

Get a bunch of solar light sticks (the kind you line your driveway with) for emergency use indoors. Charge em during the day, bring em in at night.
They used to sell cheap ones at Walmart for about a dollar...

 Quoting: Jake

If ALL the oxygen has been taken out and none can get in, I will kindof agree with you. The ground wheat will still do some unsavory things over time.

lol perhaps, but if stored right it should honestly last 6+ months
 Quoting: Presqu'ile

Meh? Maybe.

However! If you are not interested in storing and using whole wheat (which, by the way, is much cheaper as well...).

Here is what I would store instead:

Wasa crackers (in Jake's plastic bags, and in his perfect vacuum if possible) with Oxygen eaters, and canned cheese and fish in tin cans.

The canned cheese it surprisingly good tasting.

* Wasa crackers: [link to www.wasa-usa.com (secure)] <-- hearty, nutrient dense, compact
--> O2 absorbers: [link to www.amazon.com (secure)]

* Canned cheese: Indian, Mexican and Arab markets will all have canned cheeses.

* Tinned Meat: Sardines, Tuna, etc

These, with water, will always make a full, satisfying meal which requires no cooking and no refrigeration.

Edit to add: Beer or wine. That never goes bad... could use refrigeration if available, but takes very little space.
