IMO, and I am by no means an expert prepper, but canned soup seems the smartest purchase to me. Dried goods might have a longer shelf life, but it isn't food so much as access to clean water - and lots of it - that will be crucial to any survival scenario. Beans and Rice both need a fair amount of H2O to be prepared, and every ounce is water that could be otherwise utilized.
Plus, soup comes with it's own water.
I did purchase a 4-pack of Lifestraws recently, as well as water purification tablets (cheap) and de-iodinization tabs (cheap and make the purified tab water more palatable).
Otherwise, my water plans rely on rainwater.
Feel free to pick any and all of this apart. I am at best, a novice regarding these things.
Quoting: The Vigilant The Vigilant, please do stay with us. There is lots to learn among these great posters, and you will be adding helps yourself! Regarding the soups - they are very high in salt, meaning they will create more thirst, meaning they will require more drinking water. I think soups would become very boring quickly. I have gone with things to make only with hot water - need to buy a big thing of oats this week. I have dried soups from CostCo - great stuff. Ramen noodles, under which I melt cheese, just for sheer pleasure. Just keep with us and read along - there are many things you can do that are better than canned soup, though we should all have at least some of that, as well.
