I have been using a cheap $3 solar/mains rechargeable torch for about a yr. So cheap that the mains part broke after first use lol, however, it is constantly charging in the light and it has been incredibly useful as we get so many power cuts here (daily).

Anyway food preps here are flour, rice, salt, sugar.
The locals grow wheat when not rice and grind for flour and we have sugar cane also nrby.
A useful book on wild edibles would also be handy. Most crops n lots of veg grows wild if you know what to look for. The local women from poorer households are out everyday foraging in the roadsides and by the river for spinach, garlic and other leaf veg, spices n herbs, plus flowers and nettles for eating. It seems crazy but when you see a guy pushing his stall in the city loaded with stinging nettles (same old common nettles the world over) and a que (lol) to buy it then it must be good eating!
I'm considering buying a wind up radio also, just in case shtf scenario hf

Great ideas!! I did buy the wind=up radio some time ago. It's in the tsunami trunk in the car, but since I have a CB in the car, I should probably bring the radio back in here.

A book on local wild edibles is probably the very first thing we should have recommended!! You are so right!!! Dandelions make fine eating! Nasturtiums, which can be planted and grow easily, are edible, as well.

About the nettles - I've been stung by the darned things so many times - even fell backward one time in a patch while piddling in the woods. Bad memory, but hilarious to everyone who hears about it! I understand they have to be boiled multiple times to rid the sting, so I wonder what nutritional content is left.
