I got them because they are a perfect survival food...I didn't know they have insulin in them. They spread like crazy, they outgrow any weed...and they're pretty tasty. They taste like a potato that's a tiny bit sweet (but not a sweet potato). If I am going to be damned...I am going to be damned for who I really am! |

User ID: 76437275 United States 01/24/2019 01:23 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | IMO, and I am by no means an expert prepper, but canned soup seems the smartest purchase to me. Dried goods might have a longer shelf life, but it isn't food so much as access to clean water - and lots of it - that will be crucial to any survival scenario. Beans and Rice both need a fair amount of H2O to be prepared, and every ounce is water that could be otherwise utilized. Quoting: The Vigilant Plus, soup comes with it's own water. I did purchase a 4-pack of Lifestraws recently, as well as water purification tablets (cheap) and de-iodinization tabs (cheap and make the purified tab water more palatable). Otherwise, my water plans rely on rainwater and various catch basins (including a swimming pool XD). Feel free to pick any and all of this apart. I am at best, a novice regarding these things. It is what was used as an antibiotic before what is used today. It is or was used in eye drops when babies are born and the salve is used on burn victims. I have had great success using it for various things and to get rid of an infection from an abscessed tooth I couldn’t get hold of the dentist for. Worked within 24 hours. Quoting: aliasx I have also given to my kitties. One for a weepy eye and another who was bit from an animal to clear up his infection. In both cases I put few drops in their food a few times a day for 3-5 days. Same with humans although some people take it daily. I only use when needed. Can be used topically as well. Brilliant. Also check Chlorine Dioxide, Hydrogen Peroxide, and Iodine + Sea Salt Solution for very similar uses. So cheap that the mains part broke after first use lol, however, it is constantly charging in the light and it has been incredibly useful as we get so many power cuts here (daily). Quoting: curry nosher Anyway food preps here are flour, rice, salt, sugar. The locals grow wheat when not rice and grind for flour and we have sugar cane also nrby. A useful book on wild edibles would also be handy. Most crops n lots of veg grows wild if you know what to look for. The local women from poorer households are out everyday foraging in the roadsides and by the river for spinach, garlic and other leaf veg, spices n herbs, plus flowers and nettles for eating. It seems crazy but when you see a guy pushing his stall in the city loaded with stinging nettles (same old common nettles the world over) and a que (lol) to buy it then it must be good eating! I'm considering buying a wind up radio also, just in case shtf scenario Great ideas!! I did buy the wind=up radio some time ago. It's in the tsunami trunk in the car, but since I have a CB in the car, I should probably bring the radio back in here. A book on local wild edibles is probably the very first thing we should have recommended!! You are so right!!! Dandelions make fine eating! Nasturtiums, which can be planted and grow easily, are edible, as well. About the nettles - I've been stung by the darned things so many times - even fell backward one time in a patch while piddling in the woods. Bad memory, but hilarious to everyone who hears about it! I understand they have to be boiled multiple times to rid the sting, so I wonder what nutritional content is left. Quoting: Anymous Cowboy If ALL the oxygen has been taken out and none can get in, I will kindof agree with you. The ground wheat will still do some unsavory things over time. ... Meh? Maybe. However! If you are not interested in storing and using whole wheat (which, by the way, is much cheaper as well...). Here is what I would store instead: Wasa crackers (in Jake's plastic bags, and in his perfect vacuum if possible) with Oxygen eaters, and canned cheese and fish in tin cans. The canned cheese it surprisingly good tasting. * Wasa crackers: [link to www.wasa-usa.com (secure)] <-- hearty, nutrient dense, compact --> O2 absorbers: [link to www.amazon.com (secure)] * Canned cheese: Indian, Mexican and Arab markets will all have canned cheeses. * Tinned Meat: Sardines, Tuna, etc What great ideas you have!!! Canned cheese would be my total thing - I adore cheese. We only have a c ouple very small Mexican stores here - price would probably be prohibitive, right? Sardines and tune are great protein, and great change from beans and rice. Just not too much - Fukushima, you know. I like the look of these Wasa crackers, Anymous Cowboy. I didn't find the nutrient content = can you? Almost reminds me of hard tack, the staple that was carried on ships for probably a hundred years. It's probably still available somewhere, too. Girl, if you can eat sardines, you will survive anything, because you can eat anything i am so mad i don't like that stuff Oh!! You mean I need to like them? User ID: 73050092 Ireland 01/24/2019 01:31 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | This thread might be a good place for me to put down this idea, OP. While I was sitting on the toilet about ninety minutes ago as of this post I was reading through a Diabetes booklet I have. I was also thinking about the inevitable collapse of American society, and all of Humanity shortly after the collapse of America. I realized that insulin has a definite shelf life. I actually thought the stuff could remain in cold storage for decades and room temperature for months straight. Nope... turns out the stuff is only viable in the best of circumstances for normally less than a month's time. Only the "best of the best" insulin lasts up to close to eighty days in the best of circumstances. Quoting: darkwolf007 This means once the power grid is out, probably for months or years straight, Type 1 Diabetes are going to definitely die within about a month's time. Unless if there are a number of them who happen to have operational generators with the proper maintenance and fuel to last for years or longer and manage to secure a vast amount of insulin all Type 1 Diabetics will die within about a month's time. Type 2 Diabetics on the other hand will have a chance to eat healthier depending on where they're surviving and being willing to eat healthy foodstuff. I could of sworn I heard of a plant in another GLP thread that is a natural form of insulin. If this is true this would be absolutely essential for Type 1 Diabetics to grow as much and often as possible during the later Christian Apocalypse Events. There is a way to get insulin from pigs and sheep. My mother learned to do this, but I would need to research the concept to be of any use. I suppose we could put this under butchering and alchemy. Eireann~ I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me. - Galatians 2:20 |
