Also, some good advice about insulin and diabetics. Read the comments below the article as well, they have some tips. This article contains the original lecture on how they made the first insulin in the 1920s. It would be difficult to do, but having this info might be helpful in extreme situations.

Glad i saw this thread! What I am wondering about is if it all goes down, what I'll do about my hypothyroidism meds. Most hypo is caused by a lack of iodine, but i was born with it so Idk if thatd be sufficient for me...

I am in same boat as you and I have no answer. I just get my prescription filled for 3 months at a time which is cheaper.

Well...from what ive researched the main cause is due to little to no iodine in the diet....the standard American diet is depleted with this. In most cases, iodine supplementation such as kelp, lugols iodine solution, etc it can be fixed. When did you acquire it? I am worried bc I was born with it so Idk of that would fully help me....Idk if my body is capable of doing it without the meds. That, coupled with my docs comment(coupled with virtually no info.on it), has always stuck with me....

I got it after my son was born. My mom had. I was told it was hereditary. I’ve read up a lot about through the years and tried to educate myself of all the supplements etc but never found something that helped like the meds unfortunately. I was told that too I would die if I didn’t take ...eventually. I don’t know any alternative that works instead of the prescriptions. I only know things that compliment what you take. The statistics of women having is astronomical. Like you I can’t find any info regarding if you stop or what can be used in its place.

Thanks for the info. I was a camp nature counselor in college. I use to have hike where we’d pick edibles. Dandelion greens, black birch tree, fiddleheads, lots out there.

Reminds me of that show the weather channel had. Fat Guys in the Woods. I thought it was a riot. They have to survive for 5 days with no food and drool at the site of a blue berry they all have to split. That’s nothing for us girls especially before beach season. lol

Also, do NOT store water in milk jugs--they are made to biodegrade.

Store water in pop bottles or Gatorade bottles.

Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor
Continuation of another thread of wonderful people with the best ever ideas for practical prepping even for those with little money.

We'll also address the issues which may come up about "food stamps" and how to best manage without them, or with reduced amounts, or with partial box of food delivered with partial "food stamps".

We address power outage, heating and cooking methods, first aid, we run disaster scenarios to see if we know what to do.

This is probably the only prepping thread a person would need right now, whether long-time prepper here to share, or newbie prepper here to learn.

Welcome!! Join us and learn and teach and enjoy!!
 Quoting: Pooka

This thread might be a good place for me to put down this idea, OP. While I was sitting on the toilet about ninety minutes ago as of this post I was reading through a Diabetes booklet I have. I was also thinking about the inevitable collapse of American society, and all of Humanity shortly after the collapse of America. I realized that insulin has a definite shelf life. I actually thought the stuff could remain in cold storage for decades and room temperature for months straight. Nope... turns out the stuff is only viable in the best of circumstances for normally less than a month's time. Only the "best of the best" insulin lasts up to close to eighty days in the best of circumstances.

This means once the power grid is out, probably for months or years straight, Type 1 Diabetes are going to definitely die within about a month's time. Unless if there are a number of them who happen to have operational generators with the proper maintenance and fuel to last for years or longer and manage to secure a vast amount of insulin all Type 1 Diabetics will die within about a month's time. Type 2 Diabetics on the other hand will have a chance to eat healthier depending on where they're surviving and being willing to eat healthy foodstuff.

I could of sworn I heard of a plant in another GLP thread that is a natural form of insulin. If this is true this would be absolutely essential for Type 1 Diabetics to grow as much and often as possible during the later Christian Apocalypse Events.
 Quoting: darkwolf007

This is the plant; It is sold here alive, or dried to be used for tea.

Welcome here, ladulce! THis is excellent information! And I read below it, as well, to the stevia plant. Easy to grow and is a natural sweetener which we would especially appreciate if surviving on our storage. Many wouldn't want their tea or coffee without sweetener, and here it is. Stick a pot of it on your windowsill or deck or, if fortunate enough to have a garden, put it in the dirt!

Please do your own research, because we cannot always believe our doctors. What do you take? Iodine? Or something to remove iodine? Surely you will not die without, and can find a great substitute that you can even be trying right now!

Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor
After reviewing 123survivalplan, a video that is supposed to provide the public with 37 critical food items that are considered ‘must have’ for any prepper, doomsday and survivalist plan. However, it turned out to be a 10 minute long commercial to influence you to pay for it. Yes, we love capitalism but it doesn’t bode well for our sense of patriotism to charge Americans for information about survival. So, in response we will provide our own list.

Before we hit the precipice of disaster any good prepper and survivalist should have a minimum of 6 months worth of food (usCrow has set the minimum lower due to recessive incomes). Any given grocery or goods store has a maximum of 3 days worth of goods to last if their supply chain is cut off in the event of a disaster, and that doesn’t include the looting factor.
Grocery Stores are gone when the SHTF

There’s nothing worse than facing a disaster, running to the grocery store to buy what you need to survive and finding out the shelves have been picked dry…and now your family is going to starve. At the very least, you should prepare for your family’s sake. Keep in mind, water isn’t listed but that item should be obvious. In addition, MRE’s (Meals Ready to Eat) are specifically for field use and not intended for long shelf lives, you should have them for when you are mobile and field operations where you will be away from your headquarters from 2-3 days. You can purchase these items at cost by clicking the links.
23 Critical Items for Survival

Flour → Flour has to be stored in a freezer to give it a 2 year shelf life, if you do not put it in the freezer it’s shelf life will be cut down to a narrow 6 months.

Honey and/or Maple Syrup → Believe it or not this has an indefinite shelf life and provides ample nutrition, since you won’t see sugar on this list consider this a must have.

White & Brown Rice → Again this is another marvel of storage because rice has an indefinite shelf life and will sustain you and your family with massive calories and protein.

Beef Jerky → High in protein with a 1 year shelf life as long as it remains unopened and stored in your pantry. Be sure to check the Best Used By Date because many retailers put their oldest beef jerky that is due to be expired at the front of the shelf. Reach in the back and make sure you get the freshest!

Wheat White or Red → Excellent addition to your survival pantry with a 30 year shelf.

Whey Powder → Excellent for protein and takes up little space with a 15 year shelf life.

Yeast → If you’re in it for the long haul and plan on utilizing your flour for bread making you will need yeast to get those buns rising with a decent 2 year shelf life.

Powdered Eggs → 15 year shelf life and essential for keeping your prepper breakfast diverse.

Powdered Milk → Crucial to some of your survival culinary recipes with a 20 year shelf life.

Lima Beans – Excellent source of protein with an ample 20 year shelf life.

Dehydrated Apple Slices → 15 year shelf life and a tasty little snack to satisfy your hankering for something sweet and lean.

Granola → 5 year shelf life and sits in your stomach like a rock!

Rolled Oats → Great for hearty oatmeal in the morning and it’s 30 year shelf life makes it one of the must haves for your prepper bunker.

Jelly → We don’t expect you to make your survival efforts bland and tasteless so use this tasty topper to sweeten things up with a fine 5 year shelf life.

Natural Peanut Butter → Very short shelf life of 6 months! However, everyone loves peanut butter so at best you should rotate out these jars mainly because it’s tasty and high in protein.

Egg Noodles → This can be applied to Ramen Noodles too but they are very tasty and have a 2 year shelf life.

Canned Luncheon Meat → Lasts anywhere from 2-5 years and provides proteins and fats which we suggest to use sparingly until winter.

3600 Calorie Ration Bars → These are great as a last ditch because they are indented by portion and have a 10 year shelf life that we often use on field operations. Tastes like dry cake but packs a wallop of nutrition.

Multivitamins → Not food but we have to stress this item, especially if you have children, malnutrition can lead to a cornucopia of dangers. Most multivitamins have a recommended 5 year shelf life and you should have enough to last for 6 months at the very least.

Dehydrated Food Products → This can be applied to freeze dried meals, fruits and etc. that can provide diversity to your survival plans with typical 2 year shelf lives
.
Salt – Lasts forever and required by your body to sustain life.

Butter and Margarine – Lasts 15 years and will most likely be required for your menu.

Potatoes Dried – Lasts 20 years and always a good addition for supper.

 Quoting: Presqu'ile

This is a wonderful post, Presqi! I'd forgotten that maple syrup lasts as honey does - good plan. Also, vitamins - this could be crucial if we are eating a less than optimal diet. A multiple at the very least. I take a thousand mg of Vitamin C every day and never have colds or the flu. B vitamins help keep the bugs away and may not be present in what we are eating. Lots of vitamins are critical - we need to address this in our storage.

Rabbit is the only meat that is healthier, I think, but I cannot bear to eat bunnies. Had to as a child because my grandfather raised them. Did a couple times as an adult, then couldn't handle it any more.

Of course, if starving, a rabbit would probably seem like the very best thing I've ever eaten.

Back to my first comment... you want land in order to prep in style. You don't have to be rich to have access to land ;)
 Quoting: Anymous Cowboy

 Quoting: Penny Peppers

Land is nice ill admit but not essential. Hey Penny Prepper a thread after your own heart im guessing? Just a special thanks for Pooka's personal invite as well. This thread how ever should actually be essential reading. Love when scripture is mixed in why? Your essential spiritual food for a spiritual battle. Your source of everything good.

Another keystone element to prepping is what it is your prepping for, and duration.
I have tons of gun nut friends with every kind of assault weapon known to man with the most fire power and ten thousand rounds of ammo for every weapon. The ol cowboys didn't have 8 guns and a 100 pounds of ammo. They had a side arm and a rifle. My personal rifle of choice is a simple ruger 22. You can pick one up for about $200 to $750 depending on how fancy ya wanna get, I have a couple of 25 round banana style magazines. The ammo is cheap and it is easy to carry 500 to a thousand rounds easily.

Of course my rifle is more for meat to eat than anything else, im not looking to engage, just fade away somewhere between 8k to 10k feet and rugged terrain. High ground.

Food Insurance
2000 Calorie's, 1+ gallon of water a day. Shelter and Security.
730,000 calories, 400 gallons a year per person no showers or washed drawers. Water storage is $1 per gallon, plastic 1 gal $1, 300 gal hdpe $300, 500 gal $500, Used IBC totes food grade 325 gal $100 the way to go for a few thousand galls or less I have 3000 gals on hand, a thousand is on rain water recovery from 5000sqft of roof fills in 5 mins of good rain.

1st step to prep is Store bought prep's goal of 3 months of what you eat. On a budget buy a few extra every trip, canned meats, soups, stews, veggies, fruits, ect. Dry beans oats grains 1 year shelve life. I have thrown out a lot of this.

Long term food storage, Basic food.
[link to providentliving.lds.org (secure)]
The prices shown above is a case of 6 each # 10 cans in a case 25 year shelve life for most of what i buy. Save a lot and pick it up. The rice beans pasta is cheaper than store bought.

Long term food storage freeze dried, Entrees, soups, sauces, Baking mixes, Fruits, Veggies ect. I buy most of Aguston farms walmart or sams cheapest price free shipping.

Do the math when you buy servings, calories, costs per serving, calories per serving, serving size most other brands cost a lot more they will be a little cheaper but only 1/2 the servings and or a shorter shelf life. All packed deals include in the servings, a spoon of drink mix or milk as a serving. I got a lot of entrees.
 Quoting: sandman1

Welcome here, Sandman1! Good suggestions there! Have you also found some very inexpensive things? We are made of people of all incomes, including almost none, so we need to find things they can acquire, as well.

Too bad you have had to throw out a lot. I've read the suggestion many times that we should only buy what we actually eat, and then cycle it every time we go shopping. That's not easy to do - buying only what we actually eat. I never eat anything from a can except occasionally tuna, canned milk, canned pumpkin, yet canned is a good way of storing. Each of us have to see to our individual needs and preferences, and especially our budgets. That can be tough!

Good ideas, my dear! If we buy pool shock we can make our own bleach for nearly nothing. It is very, very cheap - comes as a granulated powder. Bleach will only store for about six months before losing power. Pool shock stays in the powder form until you mix just a little with water. I use this as my laundry and cleaning bleach al the time. Bought one box from Home Depot one fall, and have given away several packages. Still have enough to last far longer than my lifetime, and it was under ten dollars. Only takes a teaspoon to make two gallons! I'm on the same packet of it that I originally opened about five years ago! And I use a lot!

The bottles it comes in are the problem. Many are made with bad things that leach into the water and I think that is why it becomes no longer good to drink. Better to store water in things you know to be safe. Glass, of course, is best.

Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor
Some one say live and care for parasite's land yeah good luck.

Non GMO seeds not just fruit and veg but flowers. Many flower's are edible also good for health. Look nice in garden and no one would Eva know to eat them.
Also go buy a book on edible plant's know the ones to eat and those poison. Where Eva you live your area will have native plant's and yes weeds you can eat. Bugs well good protein's if desperate even poisonous animal's read and learn how to eat the meat.. Here we have cane toad's poison their skin puts out poisonous fluid when touched making it hard to kill then eat. Crows here are smart they some how carry them place them on the road to be run over then they eat the meat. Crows well if you can't own a gun shotput.. Bird's have meat not much but add flavour to any plain rice or eat with your flowers and make salad add weeds.

Really kewl, Presqi! I think it has to be soaked - didn't the old sailors soak it in their coffee or tea? A person could dunk this in their soup, or soak it there, or even in beans - as any grain with beans makes a complete protein.

Thanks very much for this!

listen to full video she tells ya, but yes you are right

Some of the notes under the video are excellent - I like the idea of making them very small, like oyster crackers, so they can be dropped into hot soup or beans or whatever, to soften and to add bulk and filling capacity to whatever one is eating.

Another suggestion is adding cinnamon. I'd like those, made small, soaked in tea with honey.

I wanted to bring up honey - we didn't discuss it in the other thread, either. Honey is worth far more than its weight in gold. Not the junk in the cute little bear or from the grocery store. Real honey. Wildflower honey, clover honey, etc.

It can be used externally to heal wounds, even.

It has tremendous nutritional quality, great flavor, goes with almost anything. This will soothe a sore throat, even.

I just went to my personal library and pulled out "Simple Foods for the Pack". It is about food for backpacking.

Example:

Sesame Chia Crackers

2 cups whole wheat flour
1/2 cup sesame seeds
2 Tbsp chia seeds
tsp salt
1/3 cup sesame oil
1/2 cup water

Mix, roll out on waxed paper to 1/4" thick
Cut into crackers
Bake 375F for 20 minutes

Store in glass jar, e.g., canning jar, with O2 absorbers

There is a wealth of info.

Recommend this book and Putting Food By for starters.

Try the used book sellers on the internet for cheap.

Of course, if you search, there are tons of free recipes online. Try some.

cheers

Lemon tree good for many health issue's and flavours. You also can cut throw in salt place in air tight containers last for over 6mths before readysamw. Good way to store when you prune the tree once a year for more fruit. Lemon trees love urine yes need a leak boys water the lemon tree.
Not only do these preserved lemon's in salt keep they tend to be sweet as the acid is removed and sugar is left even the peel is sweet.. This may help any if they need sugar to live.
Same with grape fruit.

When the shtf.. A fisherman's throw net. No fishing but handy for catching many seagulls at once. A snake pit never ate a snake but if I had too I would and poison can be drained and used on an arrow if no gun. Skin also makes a good tie.
Learn how to gut and skin also would help.
Let's not for get seaweed if you live on the coast. We all at one stage had over grown lawn well those grass seed's have flour.

Welcome here, Loila! Thank you for the great ideas! Love the idea of growing flowers to eat that others would not recognize as food!

People can purchase berry bushes and fruit trees with their "food stamps" and seeds are very cheap.
