Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor
I've been reading this morning the pinned threads here and intelligence from another source and shaking my head. What has happened to my country? This is not what it ever was or ever was meant to be.
 Quoting: Pooka

I am aghast at the violence against persons and property that we've seen. My parents raised me to be respectful of both and I would never violate that as causally as some of these actors have.

When I had to move from beach to small town to suburbs I unloaded whatever it is I have, because it's not needed in suburbia or town outskirts as it is in the country. Well, that's how it was until now. Now it's time to reload. I hate it and didn't expect it, yet the possibility has always been there or I would have gotten rid of it.
 Quoting: Pooka

It's good to refresh and then gather again what you need. I could stand to do a little more of that myself after twenty years here.

I honestly do not expect trouble in my little out-of-the-way area, and therein lies the biggest issue - we cannot guess in advance where "they" will choose to operate. I think not one of us can be assured we will not be in a chosen section. This is no time to hang out feeling invulnerable. I suggest all regulars check in daily here for a while, if you wouldn't mind.
 Quoting: Pooka

Everywhere has potential trouble. I evaluate the problems in my area and prepare for them. Sometimes I play 'what-if' games in my head that are so crazy... but then real life shows me up. Right as I type this our local ham radio repeater is doing a Wellness Net where the regulars check in and assistance is offered for food and water. It's a good model for more people to follow.

All the possibilities that now exist for stopping resupply of any and all retail outlets should be taken seriously, and fast. Cyberpunk, glad you went and did the thing today. I am going out shortly, though I have not gone out in some time [comorbidities with covid-19] other than the pharmacy drive-up window. I'm going to pick up a few things, but am mostly ready - sheltering in place has been more pleasure than pain.
 Quoting: Pooka

I'm glad that I did too. Am looking at sale ads to see what else I can put aside. It's kinda hard because this time of year the items on sale are potato chips and soda. Looking at getting some charcoal set aside as a backup cooking fuel.

I'm gonna go back and see if they have canned hams, I've got a great recipe for curried lentls and ham.

----------------------

Psssst...bacon flavored spam!

Wanna share that recipe please?
 Quoting: Mental Case

Here you go!
[link to cooking.nytimes.com (secure)]

Normally I wouldn't share a NY Times link but they do have a good cooking section

Edit: I've tried this recipe with all kinds of modifications and they all come out good. Canned ham works really well and, although I hadn't considered it, I imagine that bacon flavored Spam would do just fine. It says "soup" but it is the heartiest soup that you've ever seen. Plenty good for feeding your troup after an afternoon of work.

Next edit: Apparently NYTimes doesn't like being linked from GLP and they want you to login if you click on the link above. With a little effort you can add h t t ps:// to the rest of the link below:

Yeah, I've been looking at sales and decided that maybe I should take advantage of the sales while I still can. This fall is gonna be a whole different game.

Edit: I've been thinking about how Koreans would put a charcoal burner under a table and everyone would sit around it to keep warm in the winter. There's issues with carbon monoxide to consider but all in all, a possible solution to staying warm in the winter if you are in a drafty house.

Edit 2: There's a table in the garage that I can cut down to sitting size and I have a chess/checkers set to play while the snow flies outside. Oh, and a 4000 volume library. If all else fails, I'll be fed and warm and entertained.

Happy to know all good in your location. No emergency here, either, other than painfully tired after yesterday's outing - not at all unusual.

Sure are many silent people. KTee - answer up, please.

Godblessya let's hear it from your corner!

So many of you - and of course the sneaky little piece of work leaving me reds without the decency to sign them and give a reason.

Cyberpunk, thank you for taking on the roll-call duty! We may have to put on our boots and go slogging out to locate our missing folks.

Apparently it's been used for hundreds of years. I wouldn't do it without a modern carbon monoxide detector in the room but I know people that are afraid to refuel a kerosene heater. I'm just looking at solutions for edge case uses. I've got many other ways to keep warm.

Nope - what are you thinking? These people demonstrating, and those rioting, are in large groups, very large, thousands sometimes, without "social distancing" and without PPE - the virus will be going crazy in about ten days and for some time after that.

That is when we have to start being truly vigilant - compared to what's coming, we've only had a practice run at lock-downs and carefulness.

We are kinda saying the same thing...if another week (or 10 days) goes by & there is NOT an new outbreak...then I think we are pretty safe. They've been rioting close together with no PPE...and then arrested in mass...there "should" be a new outbreak.

Hey hey~

I'm about as speechless now as I was 2 weeks ago. All that is happening in our current time is totally off the chain.
I'm so glad I have this thread to reflect on and I hope this thread can get to others. I listen to Broadcastify in my area constantly now.
So wish I could talk my S/O into moving to Polk county. Really don't like our position here and if things go wild weasel in the neighborhood I'm seriously afraid for this place and our safety. I pray.

An update here.
Finally after 2 weeks of arguments over a generator that we ordered that had to be returned, Finally got resolved. What an ordeal that was. I have never seen such incompetence as I did getting thru that very stressful nightmare.

Anyhoozles was able to score a chainsaw and a 100lb propane tank. Little did I know that propane now is $4.a gal soooo fillin that bad boy is on the back burner so to speak.
Got some other stuff tho.. lots of batteries and lighting, solar/crank radio...more canned goods and started to stock energy/protein bars.
Still need a set of walkie talkies/CB/Ham.
Medical Kit and Nightvision.
Will never have enough I feel for the days to come. It's got everyone on edge here.

Much Love~ Be safe. Prayers to all~

Me, too. Went out both of the last two days. My body just cannot do that. Needed to go out today for a different type of errand and just cannot. Too physically wracked with pain and exhaustion. However, I've collected most of what came to mind. Have to order just a few more things on Amazon - I want to patronize locally-owned stores and forget Walmart, etc, and do little online, but right now isn't the time to switch.

[Cyberpunk, oddly just now I am listening to a different perspective on the Oroville dam - you might want to hear this. [link to www.youtube.com (secure)] ]

Two things I have not yet been able to get and need: an old-fashioned orange juice squeezer - you know the type I mean - and a couple more boxes freedom seeds. Found one store locally that has a good brand of my odd size always in stock, so I picked up a box every month or two. Very unexpectedly in this quiet little town, in a store not at all a shop of that type, in the smallest section of this store, suddenly there is a constant run on freedom seeds. I didn't ask about the shiny things, long or short, but didn't see as many on display as usual. She said some weeks they receive no freedom seeds at all, and other weeks only a few, or only a few sizes, etc. I am surprised as I expected to be able to go on purchasing there. Thus I have made an unfortunate calculation and will have to call every Thursday to see if the truck is carrying what I need. Oh - and now they have a sign up limiting purchase to only two of any one caliber.

Yesterday that store was my last stop of the day, as I could not continue, and of all things, once inside I realized I'd forgotten my mask!! With so many risk factors I am and must be very careful, and there I was as though I hadn't a care in the world! I could not force myself to go back out to my vehicle to retrieve it, so I had to just wing it and pray.

Please continue to take all precautions, Cyberpunk, as we are now entering such a dangerous period. Hope you are about done with the topping off and ready to hold still. I'm going to look on eBay for the orange juice squeezer, and not go back looking for the freedom seeds unless having telephone confirmation first. We really have to be extremely cautious now - far more than earlier in this covid disaster. Hope MC understands and will exercise extreme caution himself.

Off the beaten path is the only way to travel now! If one MUST travel at all, that is. Freeways were built to encircle cities in order to shut them down quickly and thoroughly. That will soon be used.

We are in remarkably new territory in this country and most are handling it very poorly. Only preppers seem to have a small handle on what would be appropriate at this time - and that's having our own supplies and the means to protect them, all under our our own roofs, of whatever sort those may be. If you have a bug-out location and are not there yet - best get moving! If sheltering in place, have everything you need there, yesterday! Antifa has promised to destroy farm houses and cattle, and every little town now is under threat, as well. There is no safe place in the continental US. The corona virus has seeped into every corner and cul de sac, as well, and will be working overtime now with all the protesters and riot-goers. This is nothing like my country has always been.

If you tell the propane dealer that tank is your primary source for heating/cooking, you can save some $$.

Fuel for heating and cooking is non-taxable (at least, here in CA). I have a big tank in my yard, but can't afford to fill it. I go in every few weeks and have smaller portable tanks filled. My dealer knows that this is our primary cooking fuel and doesn't add the tax. Hope it helps.

Thank you for that tip. Hope they are as understanding here in Florida.

Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor

I have heard freedom seeds are becoming scarce and prices are rising due to current events. Obtaining freedom seeds in this state has become problematic due to recent legislation. All freedom seed purchases require the buyer to undergo a figurative prostate exam (with a fee) with all kinds of associated pitfalls. I can pass a prostate exam no problem, but the state then wants to store and track the type and quantity of seeds I buy. That I cannot abide.

Thankfully, I have the utensils and culinary expertise to make freedom seeds from basic ingredients on my kitchen. Also thankfully, this state has not yet begun to track basic ingredients. Thus, I have a good supply of such seeds.

In fact, my son and I are planning to sow some of those seeds tomorrow at the local outdoor public freedom garden.
