I've posted on this thread before, but here's a recap for new visitors:

Four essentials for basic survival:
Water
Food
Shelter
Security

Usually in that order, but not always. Your environment will make that determination for you.

Everything else beyond those four items is a luxury. Don't focus so hard on what you wish you had that you become incapable of utilizing what you do have to its fullest potential.

Your preps, whether you have 72 hours or 72 days, are not designed to keep you alive indefinitely. They are to give you some time and breathing room to make plans and find other sources of what you need. Don't run your preps down to zero and then decide to go foraging for supplies. You need food and water in order to have the energy to find more food and water.

Attitude is everything. Those who have the mindset to survive, will. Those who do not, won't. It really is that simple.

If there is no food to be found, insects contain some of the highest levels of protein ounce for ounce. The trick to eating insects to survive? Don't chew. Swallow whole like a vitamin pill.

If there is no water to be found, your own urine is 95% water and is sterile. So it can be recycled directly if necessary, but not indefinitely. It will eventually become undrinkable after a few rounds and kill you. Better to distill urine to filter out that other 5% if you can. However, in a life-or-death situation, direct recycling might buy you an extra couple of days to find fresh water.

Understand your surroundings and how to use them to your advantage. If you are in an extremely hot environment, for example, it's best to shelter during the day and move around at night.

Whatever you do, don't panic. If you make a decision in panic mode, it will most likely be fatal. Be prepared to make hard choices and do not allow emotion to cloud the decision making process. I won't give you examples; you'll know when it happens.

Good luck, everyone.

Good to see you again, Riff-Raff! Hang around, learn more, teach more!

People do need to be well-prepped by now, as some things are no longer available and the rest are becoming more and more expensive by the day. Nevertheless, if you are new to prepping, start right now - read from front to back on this thread very quickly, making lists as you go. Wear gloves and mask and go shopping, quickly. Mark off your list as you purchase something, then go back to reading and adding to the lists.

Many advise one gallon of water per day. They are not thinking. Store a minimum of four gallons water per day per person. Even at that amount, you will wish you had more.

Stock methods of water purification - do this first thing. Water is the most crucial need you will have. Be ready to purify it, haul it, save it, collect it, do whatever you must do to have a constant supply of water. Do whatever you must to have a constant means of purifying that water.

Don't forget to stock food and supplies for pets and any other living creatures for which you are responsible. Have food for them for the same length of time as yourself.

Read quickly, shop quickly, store quickly.

Riff-Raff, good to see you - don't be a stranger!
