Nobody is stranger than I am, and it's good to see this post still getting attention. It's got a lot of good source material.

One thing on the gallon of water per person per day; that includes cleaning, cooking, and wipe-down bathing. Remember that water is extremely heavy and takes up a lot of space. 1 gallon weighs 8 pounds, so you have to be practical about storing water. Filtration, bleach, boiling, distilling, and water purification tablets are going to be your primary methods of purifying new water coming in. It's best to know about all of those methods and have them all available to you if possible. Also, a LifeStraw will be the best $20 you ever spend that will allow you to safely drink water from just about any source. This is a must-have for any bugout bag and general preps.

Those of you on a well system, look into methods of operating your well pump without electrical power. I have a kill switch that disconnects the pump from the mains and draws power from a line run to our generator. Installing a hand pump is another method if your well isn't too deep.

People went beyond the basics here a couple years ago or so here, but it's nice to see your "name" and that you are still interested in prepping. I would encourage you to read the last hundred pages or so and see what all we have come up with - a great deal, definitely.

Thank you for reminding everyone of the requirement for people with their own wells to find or manufacture a way or three to get water from those wells in case of a grid down situation, which even FEMA says is likely. Water is crucial - you might survive for a while chewing leaves, but without water - not happening.

Have to completely disagree with you about the "Life Straw", Riff-Raff. That's what I used to think, as well, until I was educated by the best prepper I've had the privilege to meet, a fellow of life-long experience and remarkable wisdom who shared so generously that I feel I knew nothing at all about prepping until meeting him. We spent roughly six months, hours per day every day, with him teaching me and me occasionally knowing a little something to enhance his preps.

From here the word "you" is the editorial "you", not intending to indicate any one person. "You" in this case means anyone reading here, anyone who hopes to survive what our world has fallen to being. Best wishes to YOU.

Back to purification straws - please read carefully side by side the advertisements and explanations of Life Straw and Sawyer's Mini. Check out the price difference first, then read all the facts. You will immediately see why Life Straws will do little for you compared to Sawyer Minis. Save yourself a lot of money and buy the right thing. Do I make money from saying this? LOL Don't I just wish!!!

One gallon of water is nearly enough for one person, for drinking only, while doing the hard work needed when we are in the deep stuff and working on surviving. It will not soak or cook beans or rice, thoroughly wash your hands several times, which you MUST do to prevent infections of even tiny cuts or scratches, or wee little blisters, much less your face, hair, body, clothing, dishes, countertops, or clean the bathroom after you've made a mess washing yourself in there. Later you might want to wash your dishes - with what? Need a drink? Drink what?

Four gallons water per day per person minimum.

Yes, very heavy - so who is going to charge off into the woods carrying one gallon, much less more? No, doesn't work that way. First of all, if you are headed to the woods hoping to find a place to survive - you are dumb, guilty of extremely poor planning, and will be very lucky to be alive in five to seven days!

In addition to Sawyer minis, have tablets to purify water, pool shock to purify water, a container to boil water to purify water. A lot of the above. How long do you plan on surviving? That much.

I encourage everybody to start at the beginning of this thread and educate yourself so that you may very well survive what is coming!! To try something you've always read about in years past is a large mistake. You will NOT survive if you think you are going to take a bug-out bag to the woods and make it there. SO many reasons why - just read the thread and see. Most of us posting here are extremely careful and thoughtful people, wanting to give the best advice possible, never suggesting something that could harm a person in desperate need. We want only the best for you, and want to help you survive.

We ask that you decide for yourself what you must do, what is wisest and safest for you - don't take solely our word for anything - research, talk to your doctor, your pharmacist, a kitchen expert, a nutritionist, anybody who represents expertise in something you are considering doing. Or use your own experiences and wisdom to determine what you know to be good for you.

Take on new knowledge you find here, and research it further. Just one small example - are you aware that wildlife has been poisoned with the wasting disease to make it inedible to humans? And here you thought you were hightailing for it the woods, going to survive on deer and elk and moose - right? Wrong. There is a great deal of bad news out there for those who think they can survive on their own in the woods - start reading, my friends, and see what you learn.

If you still want to try it after reading this thread, by all means do what you think best. Use the thread for all the other information and ideas.

We also encourage you to teach, people. This is again the editorial "you". Everybody knows something, and we want to know what you know at least as much as we want to share with you what we know! Whatever your area of expertise, do teach us!

If you have just found this thread and are excited about it, if you have sufficient green karma to pin it for others to find and become excited by, please do. We are so close to needing this information that there just isn't much time left. Let's alert and inform as many people as possible as quickly as possible.
