I sold all my silver several months ago when it was approaching $25.

I guess I should have held onto it.

I doubt there is any way to prep for this...but if it ever happens where we need to hide in our hidey hole for a month...we're going to have to become masters at the art of doing NOTHING!

That's gonna be tough! hiding

Anybody want to talk about "prepping" for retirement?

Sure we all save money in our 401Ks or IRAs (a form of prepping)...But now I'm thinking about a little house in a red state with no state income taxes where I can set up a little gold mine in my back yard and dig up a half an ounce a gold per day (just for shits & giggles).

South Dakota LOOKS good now but in SHTF conditions you had better be able to chop ten cords of wood and sleep with one eye open against theft and mayhem. I lived there for two winters and it made my previous state Iowa look like the tropics. The winters are effing brutal. Extinction level events. -5°F as the high temperature for days in a row, with 40 mph winds as the standard daily fare. It doesn't just snow, it snows SIDEWAYS. I lived in Iowa for 15 years before SD and I have never been so cold for so long in my life as I was in SD... and this was WITH electricity and WITH natural gas heat and a thermostat. Good luck after an EMP.

Also you will need to seriously consider the impact of your neighbors the Native Americans, mostly Lakota and Dakota tribes. They tend to have a very different concept of "private ownership" and play by an entirely unfamiliar set of rules. The ones that drink can be violent and hateful. I had my life threatened more than once by agro drunks, and I'm one of the nicest people you could ever meet.

There is gold and silver in the Idaho panhandle, and the people here are a lot easier to cooperate with. Winters are surprisingly mild. Or choose a different red state like Oklahoma or Alabama or the mountains of South Carolina. Why not have a little drive around the country this spring while gas prices are still low, camp out and get a feel for where you feel at home.

South Dakota is colder than Alaska. It would be one of my last places on my list for a place to settle. Could not wait to leave that place.

Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor
Hey, Pooka, I decided to drop in again.

Ref prepping, I bought silver coins when they were cheap.

I have a Masters in Econ, so I KNOW what happens when gov debt goes asymptotic and unpayable. The book, This Time It's Different, covers the history of currency debauching, debt defaults, and hyperinflation that ALWAYS occur with such financial madness. It has been thus since ancient times.

What follows such hyper events is CHAOS with revolutions, coups, rampant crime, etc. I just hope we don't have something akin to the French Revolution followed by Napoleon.

For years we have known that TPTB have manipulated the price of PMs lower. However, if enough peasants buy PHYSICAL metals such as silver coins, there is nothing the govs can do about it.

Sure, the Fed can backstop the losses of the banks and hedge funds, but the price of physical will still reflect reality.

And the reality is that runaway debt leads to hyperinflation, hence, PREP.

I fully expect that my Social Insecurity check, retirement check, etc. will become nearly worthless.

At some point in the future I will be selling vegetables and eggs at the front gate of my farm. Will take gasoline, scrap metals, ammo, etc. as payment if greenbacks become toilet paper.

Still strongly considering selling my homestead and moving to Central America where I have a lot of loving, loyal family.

Darth, I thought you were just busy elsewhere. Had no idea you decided to be only a drop in now, instead of a regular. Please PM me the reason.

Good to see your post. We need that wisdom you displayed so please keep on coming with it!

I wanted to troll some info so I stopped at my local coin shop & bought 10 ounces of silver today.

I asked the guy how sales have been & he said nuts since friday.

I asked how were the supplies coming in...he said "they WERE" (as in...they used to be). He didn't elaborate any further.

One thing I forgot to mention. He let me pick my silver rounds from a box...once I had my 10 there were only 8 to 10 left.

All the other silver he had in the store was "collectable" silver items...much higher prices.

OK...it's time to take poop prepping from theory to reality.

Scenario: The water has been turned off 1 minute ago...your toilet has 1 flush left.

Can you build an alternate pooping device before you have to go?

Will you need to go to the store for parts?

Are you going to wait until you're crossing your legs trying to hold it in?

Everybody seems to have a theory...but not an actual plan.

We wont know when it happens. All we will know is we have to poop really REALLY bad and the toilet wont flush tissue

I took an old chair, mounted a toilet seat on it & cut a hole in the chair seat. A plastic garbage bag holds the waste (I made it for when my dad broke his knee and couldn't use the toilet because it was too low).

I have it in my garage ready for use if needed.

Get the kind that attach to the pants with buttons. Not those silly little clasps that always break. And then you lose the piece that fell off and you can't fix it.

Bailey's sells the good suspenders and the pants that have the buttons. www.baileysonline.com

They also sell the buttons, so that you can retrofit other pants. They call them 'bachelor buttons' because you don't need to sew them on. You just need a knife and a hammer.

SInce I have a composting toilet it is a moot point. But it is easy to build a shitter. Pee down the sink, never in the toilet. I've had to train myself to not urinate and shit at the same time. Makes it kind of funny when I am in the city. Take a piss, wait 5 minutes, go take a dump. That gets quizzical looks!

So have a 5 gallon bucket (pre-make a seat if you need one) and stash a bag of sphagnum moss 'in case'. Put an inch or two of moss at the bottom, shit, cover with moss. And DON'T pee in it!

Very easy for the prepared sort. Have a five-gallon bucket and plenty of 13 gal. kitchen garbage bags. Have the seat and lid that snap onto the bucket top tucked away somewhere for just such a time as this. Hang a roll of paper on one side of the wire bucket handle. Have cat litter, charcoal, fir or pine needles, saw dust, etc, for absorbent and covering material. Presto! Your bathroom is ready to use in five minutes or less.

Now to be more honest - my knees will not permit me to sit on that height, and I have not yet figured out what I can place the bucket on that will bring it to the correct height, and be solid enough not to slip around or cause me to fall. Ideas, please?

Also, please be advised that one must keep the poop and pee separate, as the combination is what makes that gosh-awful smell that makes us walk right past a forest outhouse and go to the trees. We need to practice that separation, do we? Or do some have it made?

Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor
OK...it's time to take poop prepping from theory to reality.

Scenario: The water has been turned off 1 minute ago...your toilet has 1 flush left.

Can you build an alternate pooping device before you have to go?

Will you need to go to the store for parts?

Are you going to wait until you're crossing your legs trying to hold it in?

Everybody seems to have a theory...but not an actual plan.

Obviously few women would be capable of peeing in the sink - next idea?

Also, if the sewer backed up in the toilet during this outage of misery, what's your plan? I found a child's toy at the Dollar tree which is football shape, with some sort of stick sticking out of it - no idea what it is meant to be, but the "football" seems the right size to shove into the bottom of the toilet. If it all starts coming up all the drains, I think it's time to run away - no idea how to do that!

I'm not opposed to taking a squat outside.

Gardens like that sort of thing, apparently. chuckle

Not the poo!!! Imagine eating the vegetables, fertilized with human excrement! All the heavy metals, medications, goodness knows what. And even flowers and such - at some point you to have to weed and tend them!
