OK...it's time to take poop prepping from theory to reality.

Scenario: The water has been turned off 1 minute ago...your toilet has 1 flush left.

Can you build an alternate pooping device before you have to go?

Will you need to go to the store for parts?

Are you going to wait until you're crossing your legs trying to hold it in?

Everybody seems to have a theory...but not an actual plan.

Also, please be advised that one must keep the poop and pee separate, as the combination is what makes that gosh-awful smell that makes us walk right past a forest outhouse and go to the trees. We need to practice that separation, do we? Or do some have it made?
 Quoting: Pooka

Have a pee bucket and a poop bucket...always pee first.

Glad somebody is taking this seriously because I have one built & I just had to use it...and it was STILL a pain in the ass! But it did the job!

My main sewer drain got plugged up with tree roots. Anything I flushed would have ended up on the basement floor...BLYUK!

Very easy for the prepared sort. Have a five-gallon bucket and plenty of 13 gal. kitchen garbage bags. Have the seat and lid that snap onto the bucket top tucked away somewhere for just such a time as this. Hang a roll of paper on one side of the wire bucket handle. Have cat litter, charcoal, fir or pine needles, saw dust, etc, for absorbent and covering material. Presto! Your bathroom is ready to use in five minutes or less.

Now to be more honest - my knees will not permit me to sit on that height, and I have not yet figured out what I can place the bucket on that will bring it to the correct height, and be solid enough not to slip around or cause me to fall. Ideas, please?
 Quoting: Pooka

In a pinch you could line your toilet bowl with the plastic bag...use it...tie the plastic bag closed & throw it in the trash. The only problem is the bottom of the plastic bag will get wet from the toilet water & drip...so bring your trash can into the biffy with you.

I'm upping how much contained water we are getting regularly now.
I saw the sheriffs report on this and said that the public was in no danger cause they caught it in time. Sheriff also warned all neighboring cities to up their security protocols.
Oh I hope they stay on top of this threat.

Yes, it surely is. Have your plans set, your water, food, protection from the elements - ALL elements- and communications in place. Plan to stay at home if at all possible, to maintain the safety and familiarity as well as your preps, neighbors, everything you know.

It's possible you might have to leave but later be able to return. Bearing this in mind, have some things hidden carefully away, as difficult to find as possible, since if your property has been broached, all your preps and belongings likely are either stolen or damaged beyond use. You could regain the familiarity of home, and need to have water and food there, as well as warm clothing, fire starters, etc.

Another word on indoor make-shift toilets:

If a family member is older, disabled, obese, otherwise challenged, bedside commodes are readily available in all sizes and adjustabilities, both new and used. These will be far safer and more comfortable for many people, including small children. There are even liners for the container that goes under the seat, so that they and contents can be easily discarded into a larger trash bag.

Try a thrift shop, yard sale, anyplace you can think of. Not hard to find, and would be a great help to many, including that young child you were just starting to potty train when shtf.

So I says to myself...Mental Case...what do you do in this cold if the power goes out?

Welp...I have my truck full of gas if I need to bail on my house. I have the fire place full of wood ready to be lit. And I'm cogitating on how I can add any amount of heat to the house...any way at all.

I do have a gas powered hot water heater. So I'm thinking I could leave the hot water drip kind of fast in the tub...take a pipe & catch the drip & run it to the rear of the tub...so the hot water is heating the tub itself & all the pipes & traps on it's way out.

Then I thought...hell, I could do that with every sink in the house...even the basement wash tub. That should add "some" heat to the house!

Yet another way to warm up for a while.

Park your car in the sun & clear the snow off the windows.

I just jumped in my truck, it's 0 degrees outside & it was nice & warm in there because it's parked in the sunshine. This was before I even started it.

Texas/Oklahoma border here,,,, still about 5 inches of snow from last storm,,,, snowing now,,, got about another inch in the last hour or so,,, here is the story,,, most businesses closed due to no power, ones that are open have already ran out of nearly everything, lots of places where credit card/atm cards not working, so cash only,,,, any fast food place open has ran out of food, 3-4 hour lines to fill propane tanks, water off in most places, power only on about 15 minutes in 8 hrs if lucky, no pet food left in any store open, gas stations that are open are running out of fuel, grocery stores closed due to no water or broken pipes, shit getting real out here folks.... stay safe....

Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor
Thanks, guys, for the Texas posts. When they get a little under control down there, it will be a good time to pin this thread on the front page again, to help them with their hindsight. They may never experience such a horror again, we hope, but they will feel far better being prepared just in case.

For the rest of us in better weather, let's remember this could happen to us, as well, considering weather manipulation is very much a thing now, and because we have entered the new ice age [read The Ice Age Farmer] and solar minimum. We may have to get through the same sort of thing at any time.

MC has great ideas - check out his posts. The warmth in the vehicle parked in the sun is a great one - think about where you are parked and how you could adjust that space so that the sun is on your vehicle. Even warming for a little while would make life easier as you combat the situation inside your cold home.

So many are blaming the victims in the Texan situation - what a beastly shame. They may regret that before long. Let's lift them up in prayer - the suffering Texans, I mean, and the grinches as well, since they obviously need a heart change.

Everybody stay well and warm and don't stop being ready for whatever might come, as we don't know from day to day what that might be.

God bless you all.

You're darned right, MC!! Nobody seems to be helping there, which seems to bear out very well the suggestion that there is anger and discrimination toward Texas for even considering the possibility of seceding from the Union.

Because we know, or at least I know - y'all may not have come to this realization - that we manipulate the weather on a daily basis, deliberately - therefore we may very well, nay, likely have put the horrible cold and snow on top of them.

We are such nice people - aren't we now?

Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor
Time for a subject change, seems to me.

It's nearly spring, thank the good Lord, and that means time for starting seeds. I hope many now "get" how important growing your own food is, and that we cannot refuse to expend the work and energy any longer, but MUST get on it.

This year make a commmitment to yourself, if you are a newbie at growing things, to work at growing a set number and type of thing. Radishes grow easier than anything else, so put those at the top of your list. Radish and lettuce seed mixed together means radishes will break the surface of the soil, allowing lettuce seed to come up. Pick a few more of your favorites, and get to work.

All seed beds MUST be watered at least once a day until the seeds come up. Just soak the surface, so that the soil remains damp and the seedlings can break through. No water equals dead seeds.

Learn to watch for bugs predating your plants, and learn to water appropriately and sufficiently. After seeds break through soil, you must water to below the level of the bottom of roots. Otherwise the roots turn upward looking for water and thus end up sickly plants, soon to die. After you have watered as much as you believe necessary, stick your finger down in the dirt as far as it will go, and see how far down the soil is watered. Doubt it is as much as half an inch - only enough to sicken and kill the plant.

Okay, there's a start - who is on board to start gardening? I'll talk you through it, newbies, as long as you are working at it.

Check out "Zippo hand warmer".

It uses the same fuel as a zippo lighter but it doesn't have a flame...it has an element that glows red. Then that is covered by metal with holes in it...and the whole thing goes into a leather pouch (so you don't set yourself on fire).

Seems to me one of these hand warmers would go a long LONG way in your sleeping bag...or under the covers...as long as your head was out so you weren't breathing the fumes.
