Anonymous Coward User ID: 80075339 United States 02/21/2021 07:30 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Time for a subject change, seems to me. Quoting: Pooka It's nearly spring, thank the good Lord, and that means time for starting seeds. I hope many now "get" how important growing your own food is, and that we cannot refuse to expend the work and energy any longer, but MUST get on it. This year make a commmitment to yourself, if you are a newbie at growing things, to work at growing a set number and type of thing. Radishes grow easier than anything else, so put those at the top of your list. Radish and lettuce seed mixed together means radishes will break the surface of the soil, allowing lettuce seed to come up. Pick a few more of your favorites, and get to work. All seed beds MUST be watered at least once a day until the seeds come up. Just soak the surface, so that the soil remains damp and the seedlings can break through. No water equals dead seeds. Learn to watch for bugs predating your plants, and learn to water appropriately and sufficiently. After seeds break through soil, you must water to below the level of the bottom of roots. Otherwise the roots turn upward looking for water and thus end up sickly plants, soon to die. After you have watered as much as you believe necessary, stick your finger down in the dirt as far as it will go, and see how far down the soil is watered. Doubt it is as much as half an inch - only enough to sicken and kill the plant. Okay, there's a start - who is on board to start gardening? I'll talk you through it, newbies, as long as you are working at it. The heirloom corn I have takes 120 days to grow. I have a variety of sweet corn that only takes 90 days to grow (golden bantam). I've been thinking I should really try that seed...but it's very old :( I'll be amazed if I can get any to sprout! - MC |

I used to walk with a cane always, and it was considered sexy. I wouldn't care what people thought of me using a walking stick, and if they in fact saw me walking, they would quickly grasp why I needed it. The article you linked has even more uses for the stick than I had considered, and I like it very much. It is great for safer walking, indeed - hang your belongings in a neckerchief or a burlap bag on the crook of it and save on your hands. Thank you for the excellent post, Lance. 'Preciate you! From the internet, hackers can mess with water, electric, nat-gas, traffic lights, communications, banking records, hospital records, pharmacy records, etc. etc. Now is more important than ever to be prepped! - MC Absolutely! We MUST keep our heads on a swivel and be ready for everything and anything. Need to have anything at all that we might ever need right under our roofs and/or in our vehicles, because we don't know where the threat may come from, ever. Water water water - we cannot have enough water, for so many reasons. Water purification methods - not just boiling, which may be ideal, but not always convenient and perhaps not even possible. Have tablets for purification, and bleach or, preferably, pool shock, and Sawyer minis. All the above, the more the merrier. Have your new bathroom ready to go at a moment's notice, not trying to hold off and get the necessities when you begin to see it might be necessary. That's a huge mistake many make in prepping - waiting til the last moment, which does not exist. Be certain to have forms of entertainment for all ages of your family. Preferably most which do not use batteries. Books, games, crayons, painting supplies - even paint by number just for relaxing. Remember that your children will gain age and change interests during this time, so account for that in your entertainment preps. Same with foods. Some here do not have access to youtube - we don't need any comments about why that is - but anything you can think of that you have only seen recommended on youtube please post here for their assistance and advantage. You could make cups from newspaper, or use those little cups made to plant in the ground, and start that excellent corn indoors, to see what will germinate, before taking up landscape with it. As first - I have dibs on some of that corn seed, perhaps half a dozen, if it does well and you get to the seed-saving point. We have pretty short seasons here, and not very warm generally, so corn can be a difficulty. Would love just a few ears of my own home-grown. Hi, Pooka. Well, here we are nearing Spring planting again. I have all of my seeds ready. However, I need to move the chicken yard fence and cut down a few small oak trees. Had a huge oak in the middle of the chicken yard. However, it was diseased at the base, and one night a year ago one of the tow trunks about 2 feet in diameter and 70 feet long fell on my barn. I nearly fell off the barn roof while cutting it, so I decided that work is for young, agile folk now. As I slid down the sheet metal I let the saw fall off the roof and I used my hands to grab the ladder. Better to buy a new saw and save my hide! Back in Dec. I had a contractor put a new roof on the barn. He had an assistant cut down the other half of the oak of the same size. I pulled it over with the tractor while he cut so it did not fall on the barn like before. It took me about a week to cut it up with a chainsaw. However, I am getting stronger and can cut faster now. When I am done with the hydraulic splitter, I will have a LOT of firewood for prep. Now, that chicken yard is not shady and is loaded with nutrients deposited over the years by my chickens. That is the primary area that I will plant this year. I have four cows in the pasture and one dairy cow in the front yard. All of them are turning hay into wonderful fertilizer for me. I will slaughter one of the ones in the pasture and move the dairy cow, "Sweetheart", to the back pasture. The front yard will be excellent for low demand veggies such as okra and green beans. I will then plant the field in the pasture to sunflowers and possibly some veggies that do well here. Will use electric fence to keep the cow off the crops. We are NOT fully self-sufficient, but working on it. When the big freeze hit Texas I was sorry I had not installed the wood stove in the house. It still sits by the barn. However, I was well prepared with candles and kerosene lanterns which heated the house enough to be comfy. We cooked outdoors on a propane burner, so I did not go without coffee! Looking at the overall situation, I was WRONG about how fast the pandemic, economic depression, etc. would cause a crash. Our society is remarkably resilient. However, the Big Freeze taught a lot of folks the value of being prepared. I still expect more economic doom ahead. For me, prepping is a multi year lifestyle. It was always something I wanted to do, and now we are well on our way to success. |

No room in the freezer for so many. The one I will slaughter is a young Jersey bull so worth more as hamburger and soup bones. There were TWO trunks on that oak, not "tow". Duh. I should add that my productivity is down since I passed 70. I planned all of my tree felling and firewood prep for January. Behind schedule but I can keep cutting thru the Summer. We will end up with years of firewood. TBH, I am prepping so that my wife will never run out even if I am not here someday to fell trees and split wood. Every prep I do is with my wife and extended family in mind. Not just working for personal survival. |

Got it for $800. Brand new. Runs great. The guys selling it were operating out of a garage. Hmmm? Wonder where they got all the stuff they are selling? Will have plenty of firewood for next year. I am living The Life! The Queen cooked steaks, potatoes, rice, and tortillas on her outdoor wood kitchen tonight. Enjoying the end of dinner with some Pinot Noir. One of my preps was a bunch of frozen pineapple juice, 5 gallon jugs, and fruit wine yeast. When the Pinot starts running out, will try making pineapple wine. Price per glass will be about one half of what I pay at the store for a cheap, table wine. One other prep was a bunch of jugs of vinegar and 100 lbs. of salt. If you have those, you can preserve a lot of food in case electricity fails. If SHTF does NOT come, we will use those anyway. |

Got a 5 gallon bucket, a toilet seat, plastic garbage bags. Propped the bucket with the seat on top against a wall, put a bag in to line it, and hightailed it to home depot where they were happy to supply me with all the free sawdust I wanted. They put it in big black plastic bags, and I picked it up. I'd tell them a day or two before i needed it and they got it for me every time. so you put the sawdust at the bottom of the bag, do your business, then cover it completely with another layer of sawdust. doesn't matter if you pee and poop together.., I am a woman, i did so, the layer of sawdust on top prevented any smell from being released. Someone with room to store it could likely get a large amt of sawdust. It works better than cat litter and dried leaves. |
