Gone With the Wind turns 80 this year and to celebrate, you will be able to return to the theater and watch it on the big screen. If you know anyone who was alive back in 1939 and actually saw this film when it first premiered, you might want to surprise them with tickets, so they get a chance to see the film again, eight decades later. Hopefully, they don’t say, “Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn.”

Thanks to Fathom Events, Gone With the Wind will return to select theaters. However, this is a very, very limited event. The film will only be in theaters for two days (not back to back, either) with two showings per day. You can head to the theater on February 28, 2019 and March 3, 2019.

As much as I would love to see it on the big screen I will be at Mardi Gras. I watched it on drive in screen when I was younger. It’s a wonderful movie but the book is even better.

True. The book is quite an endurance read, and so worth it! Olivia de Havilland is still alive at 102 years.

I forced myself to listen to the book after my sister was telling me about Scarletts exploits at her lumbermill. Seemed too entertaining to pass up.

I hope they show the full version. Newer dvds and youtube versions have had scenes cut, I have read.

My mother and aunt took me to the movie when I was a teen. Scenes were etched in my memory for my entire life. The scene of Atlanta burning made an enormous impact on me.

When I was reading the book, my mother would hide it from me so I'd come and help her.

By all means, see it and take the family. Ignore the liberals' snivelings, just do it.

The one where he finally told off a very conniving woman, strong except she wanted everything her way. So, for men, they really should watch this.

No, I never much liked her character, the actress was good, the they man was abused as I see it. It just as it is today, men will allow women to abuse them when other woman are warning them.

It is timely, this is just a fiction, not many woman in the south wore those type clothes, that was more rich people. Who would want to die because they worn corsets, making waist lines, during pregnancy. Women died from this, it not healthy.

Hoop skirts were around and worn for probably about the same amount of time as those skin-tight jeans in the late 1970s. Those jeans were before Lycra and they caused a lot of health problems too. Remember women lying on the floor to zip them up? It was a short lived fad like hoop skirts but I'd rather wear a hoop skirt.

And corsets aren't what you think, I know because I've worn them, you have to study up on them to do it right, but they used to be just clothes, like a bra for your gut, no big deal. Hardly anyone tight-laced. It just made your clothes fit better and distributed the pressure of the waistbands of your skirts more evenly.

You don't know this but corsets worn normally, not tight lacing, don't actually make your waist much smaller. They just change the shape of your waist area from an oval to a circle. The circumference doesn't change that much, the sides of your waist go in so it looks smaller from the front and back.

Corsets can be very comfortable and obviously women who were wearing them had many more babies and much bigger families than people today.

True. The book is quite an endurance read, and so worth it! Olivia de Havilland is still alive at 102 years.
 Quoting: TXGLP2

And, she's one hateful old broad. FX's highly-praised series FEUD was slated for DVD release over a year ago then Livvy filed a lawsuit claiming that her portrayal [by Catharine Zeta-Jones] somehow damaged her reputation when it certainly did not. Specifically, she objected to the assertion that she hated her sister Joan Fontaine and called her a "bitch" onscreen; in reality, those two DID fight like cats and dogs and the media of the 40-60's reported it all the time - with DeHavilland calling her much, much worse over the many years the sisters refused to speak to one another.

Litigation ruled that FX did nothing wrong and the portrayal was within acceptable standards.. but Grande Dame Olivia is appealing and saying she'll take it all the way to the Supreme Court for a massive waste of time/money.

So much for "mealy-mouthed little Melanie Wilkes!"

Over the years I've owned several prints of GWTW, the most recent on Blu-Ray and that movie still IS stunning!! I have a 3-D digital projection system in my home theatre and on a 115" screen it brings the majesty of that 1939 classic alive all over again!

BTW: Would you believe there are still remnants of the set for "Tara" still around? Mainly windows, doors and trim they are housed in a dairy barn where preservation is slowly being done by volunteers. Back in the 50's a Georgia theme-park was planned that would've included the entire Tara main house, but it had already deteriorated beyond practical use. Even so, there it sat for over 30 years on Hollywood's legendary "back 40 acres" just a stone's throw from the working sets of 60's shows such as "Hogan's Heroes", "Gomer Pyle" and... Andy Griffith's Mayberry! Desilu Studios owned the property at the time and it was one of the busiest production lots in the entire industry.

Google "40-acre backlot" for scads of pics and maps of those sets; it'll give you an interesting perspective on how movies used to be made!

To my knowledge, current DVD releases are identical in screen content to the original 1939 roadshow release print; they also include hours of supplemental material that really fleshes out how the film was made. And every minute is well worth watching!! The Technicolor and full digital restoration of the film itself is simply DAZZLING. Since Technicolor was the only film process whose negatives never fade over time, the hues and saturation of GWTW are just as lush today as they were in 1939!

TRIVIA: for the past 60 years the original Technicolor negatives of GWTW [along with dozens of other classic films] have been stored deep in the atmospherically-stable salt mines of Hutchinson, Kansas!

Another blockbuster film from 1939 -THE WIZARD OF OZ- was given the same type of limited release a few years ago. It too was fully-restored but was exhibited with digitally-added 3-D - and it works!! Literally like seeing that old Chestnut for the first time, but even better.

My home theatre allows me to show any film in simulated 3-D and I've watched dozens of old classics in that format, including GWTW [W.C. Fields and the Marx Brothers are a true delight in 3-D!] and, it too would not be hurt one bit by adding depth-enhancement [3-D actually works best when you don't crowd the screen with jarring, fast images of optical overkill].

GWTW has just the right field of depth and deep focus that translates very well in 3-D... especially that classic scene in the Atlanta railway station where the camera sweeps over all the soldiers lain on the ground as the tattered Stars and Bars flag flutters futilely high above their heads. For emotional impact alone they really DON'T make movies like that anymore!!! And for my money haven't for about 50 years.

MORE TRIVIA: If you go to the OP's link, in the fourth picture down [it's in B/W] you'll see Scarlett O'Hara with a beaux on each side. The actor on the right is George Reeves... who later became famous as TV's SUPERMAN. In GWTW he's very easy to spot - his hair is bright ORANGE!

In real life Butterfly McQueen was just about as brainless as she portrayed "Prissy" onscreen and every single one of her later performances were the same. Same annoying little-girl voice even when she was elderly. She died at age 84 from burns when a kerosene heater blew up and burned her Augusta Ga house down in the winter of 1995. She was an avowed Atheist so it's anyone's guess whether Prissy ended up in Heaven or Hell!

On the professional autograph market, any signatures from GWTW are usually fairly pricey... when you can get them! Clark Gable and Vivian Leigh are the most common but expensive [$200-600]; Leslie Howard [who died serving in WWII] is rare [$600-800] as is Hattie McDaniel [$600-2,000]. Butterly McQueen's childish scrawl is fairly rare but cheap [$40-75]. Olivia DeHavilland's elaborate "movie star" signature is pretty common [the stars with the biggest egos always sign the most!] and likewise on the cheaper side [$40-200]. Of them all, Gable is the only one I have in my collection.
