Long range walkie talkies?
Does anyone know of a good model that will realistically allow you to communicate 30+ miles away?

We are looking and see conflicting information on whether they will actually do the job?

I am googling and seeing reviews that say that an advertised 35 mile radio will really only give you 3 miles!

I will look that up. I thought ham radios were stationary ..but I've just seen some hand held ones, I need to research further, this has just come up and I don't know anything about ham or walkie talkies lol!

It would be used in an urban environment, NYC area, so apparently the buildings get in the way of the transmissions.

Ehh, off to learn more.

bought some that advertised "up to" 30 miles, and I get about 1 miles. I still like to have them but 30 miles is BS as far as I know.

Re: Long range walkie talkies?
not going to work at 30 miles. 3 miles is going to be the furthest you can talk VHF unless using a LOS repeater. you are needing a HF setup to talk those distances. like someone said before HAM radio.

what are you trying to do at that 30 mile range that you need ?

Re: Long range walkie talkies?
There are no handheld radios that will communicate past a few miles in real world conditions without a repeater. Forget the BS advertising for 25 or 30 mile range. Those figures come from them being theoretically able to work if you were, say, on top of one mountain peak and someone else was on another peak with nothing in between you.

In the city with a 5 watt radio you will get MAYBE 1 mile. More like 1/4 to 1/2 a mile from one radio at ground level to another at ground level.

As another poster said. Get your ham license. Then you can do all sorts of things. Or simpler, get a GMRS license. It's much more restrictive than ham radio but you are allowed repeaters and the radios are simpler and cheaper.

Just get phones

You won’t get even a mile on the radios you can use without a HAM lic.

You need to have the knowledge from the ham exam to operate the repeaters needed to reach 30 miles.

Re: Long range walkie talkies?
You won't get any walkie talkies to go that far unless each is on a mountain top line of sight. Actually the old high power CB walkie talkies will give you more range than any vhf set. The lower frequency follows the curvature slightly.

Re: Long range walkie talkies?
All good advice so far.
You could do far worse than a 5 watt 27 MHz CB walkie talkie.
Do not use shorty antenna.
It's a mile or 3 with good terrain. If you have to reach further, you could carry an external battery, small linear amp and "real" antenna with ground plane, or a dipole or directional 3 element yagi to set up in a camp or wherever.

Exactly correct...in most cases you'll be very lucky to get 10-12 miles and that's if you get to bounce off some stuff or have a tall antenna connected. Usually it's more like 6 or 7 miles in my experience. Those radios that advertise 38 miles etc are quite misleading. Those numbers are what they could be capable of over a "flat earth" but the earth is not flat and so curvature kills that.
