Any Sleep apnea advice
Recently I was diagnosed with mild/moderate obstructive sleep apnea, and told that I should get a bipap machine.
Any advice on machines and masks to get, do you need a machine that provides moisture and heated air etc.
I am not overweight and have tried the mouthpiece you can buy for snoring and found that I am apparently fighting the mouthpiece in my sleep because I wake in morning with front teeth aching horribly.
Does the machine seem to help with daytime tiredness a lot or is it a waste of money if you don’t have severe apnea?

Sleep without a pillow.

Or sleep with a pillow on either side of you so when on your back your head is not on a pillow...but it is when you roll to one side or the other.

50 sit-ups a day will strengthen abs and neck/throat muscles. Also, try sleeping on your side.

Yes get the bi-pap the Cadillac of the sleep apnea. Quattro mask works real well and cut the temp all the way down on the machine. I have been on a bi-pap for 10 years, [ BI-PAP ]

I also have sleep apnea and getting a CPAP has been a game changer for me. There isn’t any pillow, or mouth piece that will help when you stop breathing in the night. I’m sure they told you after your sleep study how many times per hour you stop breathing but also what your oxygen levels drop to? I was having headaches everyday, extremely tired, inflammation, blood pressure went up, I started gaining weight, etc. you don’t realize how important sleep is until you don’t get it. Your sleep Dr, will get you set up with a machine and mask and they do a titration study to get your pressure right. It’s not really something you figure out on your own. I also had mild/moderate sleep apnea, and I sleep so much better with a CPAP. It takes a bit to get used to but worth it.

Re: Any Sleep apnea advice
My husband had terrible sleep apnea, he wouldn't listen to me until he got hospitalized for something unrelated. He finally listened to the doctors and had a sleep study done. He had been seeing a doctor for over a year trying to figure out what was wrong with him, he felt totally wiped out all of the time.

Long story short, his quality of life is so much better now! Congrats on taking the right steps towards fixing this problem, it's actually a life threatening issue.

He has the mask that goes over his nose only, not his mouth. He has the water tank in it and loves that. He used to get bloody noses a lot, but hasn't gotten any since he got on the C-Pap. He loves his. It comes with an app so he can track how he's doing on it. It also auto adjusts to his breathing as needed. You really should do a sleep study, it needs to be adjusted to your needs. My husband has his on 4, his friend has his on 9. You need to know what your setting should be.

The sleep study consisted on picking up a machine, sleeping one night with it on at home, and returning it the next day. Easy peasy, but extremely important. Make sure you do this.

If you have insurance, it will be covered, but you must wear it for a minimum number of hours per night, every night, or they won't pay for it. The insurance company only monitors your use for the first few months.

BTW OP my husband weighs 165. Screw these idiots trying to tell you to lose weight. He also works out several times a week, including 40 minutes on the elliptical. Good luck!

Re: Any Sleep apnea advice
I use an Airsense 10 autoset by Resmed. It has a humidifier, and heated tubing. I turn the heat almost off as I prefer a cool environment. It is easy to use.

I have used CPAP for several years and it can be annoying, but I do sleep pretty well with it.

My advice is, use one if you need it. My preference for the mask is nasal pillows. They are fairly comfortable and do not cover your mouth. If you can train yourself to sleep with your tongue in the roof of your mouth, it will be easy.

Feel free to ask questions.

No. 1 thing you can do besides getting the C-pap is drop some weight, sleep apnea will only get worse as you get less rest and put on more weight, not sleepin well will make you fatter which will make your sleep apnea worse. Go keto/low carb, best thing you can do.

I was damn near narcoleptic before I got the C-pap and then dropped the weight.

Use a netti pot in the morning with manzanilla tea to combat the dryness.

Nope, moisture and heated air not necessary. Just a good cpap machine will help you. Make sure you can minimize the pressure it applies while you're exhaling. The better ones back off on the pressure as you're exhaling, makes a big difference.

exercise...if you are tired every day from work on the body, you will sleep right.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 73059140

This is ignorance. No offense, but poster has never had the problem or closely known anyone who has.

My father died at 67. Complications of heart disease which were undoubtedly exacerbated by obstructive sleep apnea.

I also have obstructive sleep apnea. No 400 lb'rs in our family. It's just a genetic issue involving airway. If you don't have it or know someone who does... lucky you. I've been snoring since I was in high school. So was my Dad. Far from being an annoying idiosynchracy, it's a very real health threat over the long term. It leads to long term health consequences. It's not something you can simply quit doing. My Dad died. There was no CPAP at the time. I've used one the past 6-8 years. I am in better health than he was at this age. It is not a perfect solution, but it is better than nothing.

If you snore a lot, you owe it to yourself to get checked out. Seriously. It can be life or death.

He doesn't need to do that. He just needs to sleep with his mouth closed. You'll learn how to do that easily when you have the cpap on. I forgot to mention he also has the heater for the water, but he doesn't use it, he prefers the cool air.
