These are taxpayer funds appropriated by congress for particular project, they are not the "California" money.

No big deal, Trump, could short annual payments to Cali by 3.5 billions they already received.

This is historically what happens every time democrats fund something. Little gets done and the money goes to their private charities and shell companies. Obamas shovel ready jobs gonna rebuild bridges etc.. Money spent nothing done. His big green initiative. Money spent nothing.. Made van Jones a multimillionaire though. Big solar energy puss...repeat.. All the times they funded the wall.... Money spent.. Etc etc etc. They're fleecing

Whoever did the initial cost projection for that project KNEW that they were underestimating the cost by 90% to 95%. I have seen how much money it takes to build a second parallel rail line for 70 miles on FLAT GROUND on an already existing right of way right next to existing trackage in a rural area. Try close to 1/2 billion dollars!! ($7 million dollars a mile).

To put in an entirely NEW DOUBLE TRACK rail line, high speed that that (which probably quadruples the cost over a standard new rail line) any reasonable back of the envelope 30 second calculation, would show to be at least $70 million a mile in rural areas and 4 to 6 times that in urban areas (yep even when going through small towns).

Don't believe me? Just look at what it cost Denver to put in their new LIGHT RAIL link to the Denver Airport, most of which goes across prairie land, AND is NOT high speed. $1.2 billion and it only goes 23 miles.

No fancy study needed ... and that back of the envelope calculation would work out to be MUCH closer to the real cost than the multi million dollar study they paid some, in their pocket, lackeys to do in order to try to justify starting to build that high speed train route.

Another reason to give the contract to Elon Musk and bury it in a tunnel. No right of way issues, enviro issues and nasty neighbors.
