These people don't exist
Every time you refresh this page an AI program generates a random portrait of someone who does not actually exist. It was trained on thousands of photos from Flickr by a team at NVIDIA and it learned how to mix and match various facial features to create nearly seamless photorealistic faces:

Here's their paper describing the software:

Just think, by uploading your portrait online to Flickr, you may have unwittingly contributed to the training of this AI and others that follow on from it.

On the bright side, if you want to make a hoax conspiracy claim you can now grab a high resolution photo-realistic fake face to use as a portrait of the "source" of the story. Anyone who tries to look you up will be frustrated to no end as they go on a wild goose chase for a face and a photo that does not really exist.

I expect full motion video will be next. We're entering a brave new world, folks.

Yeah I have been seeing this development for a while.

Very soon it will be indistinguishable from reality. Voice software is also keeping pace.

Total fabrication.

But a positive is that if everything is fabricated then everything can be questioned.

One word for you,

Photoshop

Been around for a while. Just because AI is catching up to what a graphic designer can do, is not all that alarming.

Or am I missing something?

Personally I can't photoshop faces that look this good. This makes photorealistic fake face generation trivially easy. And it's just the beginning, once those faces can move and talk it becomes even more powerful. It can also crank these out orders of magnitude faster than any graphics designer could ever hope to do.

I don't see inherent distrust of all forms of media as a good thing. Especially once it reaches the point that the average person can do this by themselves from their basement without much effort. At least right now, if a fake this good was made in full motion video you could reasonably assume that it took a very skilled team to pull it off. "Deep fakes" are still easy to spot from amateurs. That may change soon, and I don't think that's a good thing.

Just because others have done similar things doesn't mean this isn't a new step in that development. They also made the source code available on github just 10 days ago as well:

I agree on the video aspect. I think that in the not so far future the hollyweird actors will all be out of a job. If CGI can just make up pretty CGI people and pay them nothing it will be a great profit to the movie production companies. Those movies will still suck though.

notice that in order to look realistic they use a canavas face with quite a lot of detail and then past eyes, eyebrows, nose and mouth on them. Clearly detail do not match.

It's not a simple copy paste operation. You can actually see video of the code morphing into various faces. It's freaky.

I don't see that as a good thing at all. It undermines trust even between ordinary citizens. The ability to communicate and share images and video over the internet is a powerful tool. The only good thing about is that the code is publicly available, making it possible to see the datasets it was trained on and develop adversarial AI's to rapidly detect fakes generated from this AI.

But it will strengthen live testimony as the only standard of evidence.

Truth is achieved quicker through live testimony method.

Absolutely. That will probably be one of the very first improper uses of this technology. Now catfishers don't have to rely on stealing "chad" pics, they can just generate an untraceable image and off they go. If they want to get really fancy they could employ another AI that's already out there to re-pose images to generate multiple pictures of the same fake person, though that's still too much work for the average person. Soon I expect these tools will start showing up in easy to use applications. The license for this one doesn't permit commercial use, but I doubt that's going to stop someone from selling something that uses the trained model.

no it's not. it won't pass for real to an educate eye.
it's not a simple copy and paste but is still a copy, mask, map and paste.

I've sow more than 40. Only one out of those 40 wasn't showing artifacts. and in fact I believe that picture was actually real because it had heavy shadows on the face and they were all matching correctly.
