They did say that EArth was going to try to be pulled into the black hole where these fallen reside. It could be called hell in some ways and yes, the world has gotten very dark indeed. Even Aug was scared shitless that he was going to be stuck in the black hole because he knows what's inside the black hole...it is the entrance to the lower astral demonic realm. Just like in that episode with Voyager? entering a black area devoid of energy and each starship preyed on another for survival. Only this is much worse because there at least you could fight back against a physical enemy...here you have no chance against the fallen entities. Like in the matrix movie they will overshadow and possess anyone they want...especially the weak willed ones.
