I would not automatically dismiss reports of nuclear detonations. Human psychology makes it so that reports of a nuclear attack are not believed to be real. That's what happened many times in the past when computer glitches showed that a nuclear attack was under way. The commanders were supposed to launch a nuclear counter attack but never did. That is why whoever launches nukes first wins. The other side will refuse to believe it is real and not respond.
