US President Donald Trump tweeted an encouraging report about trade talks with China just after the US stock market opening at 9:30 am, and risk markets soared. Trump wrote: “Had a very good telephone conversation with President Xi of China. We will be having an extended meeting next week at the G20 in Japan. Our respective teams will begin talks prior to our meeting.”

Donald Trump has spoken by phone with Russian President Vladimir Putin about the possibility of a “new nuclear agreement” in a call which lasted a "little over an hour,” the White House said.

Regarding the possibility of a nuclear agreement, Press Secretary Sarah Sanders told reporters it could either be a new multilateral nuclear accord between the US, Russia and China — or the extension of the current US-Russia strategic nuclear accord.

Despite this rear-guard battle for the liberal order, the dominant actors at the G20 are the standard bearers of the New Authoritarian Order, led by Russia’s Vladimir Putin, China’s Xi Jinping, and, of course, US President Donald Trump. On one hand, Putin and Xi put themselves forward at G20 also as defenders of a rules-based system, even allegedly of the free flow of trade. But ideas of liberal society that have always accompanied that rule of law are completely absent from their vision.
