I did not use student loan money go to Florida or Cancun on spring break, pay my bar tab, or go to the casino ( yes, I have seen all of this). I graduated a four year program with less than 10g in debt, and was out of that in 3 years by working my ass off. Today, that is considered an anomaly, in the early 90’s, it was the NORM. Let’s not ignore the sick reality that on the front end, universities are absolutely soaking “us”—it’s extortion. Since 1985, the overall consumer price index has risen 115% while the college education inflation rate has risen nearly 500%. According to Gordon Wadsworth, author of The College Trap, “…if the cost of college tuition was $10,000 in 1986, it would now cost the same student over $21,500 if education had increased as much as the average inflation rate but instead education is $59,800 or over 2 ½ times the inflation rate.” [link to www.forbes.com (secure)] |

Speaking of "medical", medical school usually costs an enormous amount. But there are exceptions. NYU medical school just went tuition-free. And NYU is building a second medical school, and they'll also make that tuition free. I don't know where the money is coming from for all this, but they're doing this. When things get too far out of whack one way, then something changes to create a way through. But it has to be said also that not everyone needs or deserves a 4 year degree. Our system spends a lot of money enrolling and then even graduating (in garbage majors) kids who should have learned a trade or something else. They're not college material. If they want to spend the money to try college, it's up to them, but we shouldn't be lending them so much money when we can tell already they're unlikely to be able to pay it back with what they'll earn. . Bad situation all around, and was encouraged by bad people in .gov. Quoting: MarPep The student loans are government guaranteed. So there is no underwriting, no risk assessment, and taxpayers are on the hook when there are defaults. It's part of why there are so many obviously unpayable loans owed by barely employable people, that have not been written off. We're going to keep trying to squeeze blood out of those stones. Government should stop guaranteeing these loans, or at least not guarantee 100% to get some corporate underwriting in there. Trump proposed that during the presidential primaries, at a speech I believe he gave in Canada. Alternatively, Sen. Lamar Alexander is proposing to rate colllege programs individually and to expect them all to meet "gainful employment" metrics. The Higher Education Act is coming up for reauthorization, so this is happening now. If his idea goes through, the government wouldn't guarantee loans for College X's Gender Studies majors if they aren't getting jobs. That would stop the bullshit too, and those programs might lay off faculty if they can't get paying asses in their seats. It's a good idea too, which is why Sen. Patty Murray (Democrat) is against it. The Dems are firmly behind the Education Industrial Complex. . It's really simple... Defaulting on a student loan is no different than defaulting on any other loan. If you can't (or won't) pay back a loan, then DON';T take out that loan to BEGIN WITH. There are millions of people who never went to college because they COULDN'T AFFORD it, or they had to work the family business to help their families make ends meet. Should loan defaulters get away with STEALING a FREE education? While people who couldn't afford it did the responsible thing and didn't take out a loan? If you do not repay your loan, then you should have your college degree REVOKED. You shouldn't be able to just thumb your nose at the lender, while enjoying the benefits that your education provides you. |

We can't make it harder for some racial groups to attend college than others after all. If you just need food, maybe you can't get food stamps, and nobody will pay for your housing. But go to college and you'll get loans to pay for your food and housing. So we end up with people in college because it's the only way they can get food and shelter.
