Can't repay or won't repay.

If they see a licensed professional pulling in a six figure salary but won't pay on the loan they are going after them.

It's really simple...

Defaulting on a student loan is no different than defaulting on any other loan.

If you can't (or won't) pay back a loan, then DON';T take out that loan to BEGIN WITH.

There are millions of people who never went to college because they COULDN'T AFFORD it, or they had to work the family business to help their families make ends meet.

Should loan defaulters get away with STEALING a FREE education? While people who couldn't afford it did the responsible thing and didn't take out a loan?

If you do not repay your loan, then you should have your college degree REVOKED. You shouldn't be able to just thumb your nose at the lender, while enjoying the benefits that your education provides you.

LAKELAND, Fla. (WFTS) — Nearly 1,000 health care workers have lost their license to practice in Florida because they can’t repay their student loans – a new crackdown potentially putting hundreds out of work, the I-Team found.

The move to suspend health care licenses comes after federal student loan companies spent years lobbying states to adopt laws to punish those who default on student loans by taking away their professional licenses.

But an ABC Action News review found Florida is the only state enforcing those laws.

Investigative Reporter Adam Walser uncovered the state’s Board of Health suspended more than 900 health care licenses – including professional certifications for registered nurses, Certified Nursing Assistants, pharmacists and opticians – in the just the past two years alone.

Just for curiosity: What should happen to those loans where the student washes out of professional school or is otherwise unable to meet the requirements for a license?

What if the rules are changed in midstream?

If it's a government school and they change the rules, should the government loan be paid by the government? Both students and government are capable of fraud on the other.

Most of the medical folks listed in the OP do not make 6 figures/year. College debt should not happen unless earning an advanced degree in medicine, engineering, or the hard sciences. Unfortunately, the loan companies made it too easy to get loans. If the debtors default and go broke, they still owe the Student debt, and the loan companies can't pay their depositors back. Bad situation all around, and was encouraged by bad people in .gov.

The hilarious part about all this: We used to base our professional licenses on merit that the person has the knowledge to do the job and take responsibility for it. Back in the day, you didn't even need to be a college grade to get your professional license, you could be sponsored and pass the exam. Now that they can take away these licenses due to debt, saying bad things, or just because you're white just shows that these licenses are now meaningless to all and the responsibility now falls onto the debt collectors and the state.

Congratulations on making professional careers completely and utterly useless. I hope that you're on the next bridge that collapses or a die due to a useless third world doctor misdiagnosing you.

university system is almost as f'd up as medical system
 Quoting: Eilonwy

Speaking of "medical", medical school usually costs an enormous amount. But there are exceptions. NYU medical school just went tuition-free. And NYU is building a second medical school, and they'll also make that tuition free. I don't know where the money is coming from for all this, but they're doing this.

When things get too far out of whack one way, then something changes to create a way through.

But it has to be said also that not everyone needs or deserves a 4 year degree. Our system spends a lot of money enrolling and then even graduating (in garbage majors) kids who should have learned a trade or something else. They're not college material. If they want to spend the money to try college, it's up to them, but we shouldn't be lending them so much money when we can tell already they're unlikely to be able to pay it back with what they'll earn.
 Quoting: oniongrass

Rice University in Texas and Stanford both have a tuition free option for kids whose parents earn under $130,000 per year.

It includes room and board too.

Everything paid for.

The trick is that you have to earn this spot and it is hard to get in.

Look there is absolutely no reason someone who is a nurse or doctor currently working in that field cannot pay their student loan. You can automatically forbear for almost 5 years--after 1 year deferral. In my case I had almost 20k in loans and exited due to illness and didnt return back. I deferred, then used forbearance for 5 years... refinanced through federal program-- forbeared for another 5 years. Went back to college and deferred while in. I literally took a semester off in between terms and overall went almost 18 years without paying a dime. Yes, it cost me about 5k in capitalized interest-- but I NEVER defaulted. Even now I have it set on a 25 year graduated payment plan. These people who arent paying are cheating the system or not practicing. Either way there is no excuse.

This is a civil matter between the loan companies and the debtors.

It doesn't matter what people spent their money on or didn't.

The solution to this is to make these loans dischargable in bankruptcy.

1. Most of the loans wouldn't be made to begin with

2. The inflated price of college would fall drastically

3. Most people would not just discharge their loans simply because they can (but that's what people want you to believe)

I would prefer that the person providing my medical care was the person with the most aptitude and ability to do the job, not the person who had the financial opportunity to study medicine ahead of potentially highly talented physicians who for whatever reason could not afford university fees.

I believe that entry into university should be limited, to meet predicted demand for the profession, and available on merit, not ability to pay.

But if I run into the situation where I'm not making $$, they do have payment plans contingent on income. I'm on one right now during my school break. It's $0 a month. So I don't understand lack of communication and payment with student loan administrators.

Fucking $150,000 for a doctorate though. Dayum. Been pricey.

A debtors' prison is a prison for people who are unable to pay debt. Through the mid 19th century, debtors' prisons (usually similar in form to locked workhouses) were a common way to deal with unpaid debt in places like Western Europe.[1] Destitute persons who were unable to pay a court-ordered judgment would be incarcerated in these prisons until they had worked off their debt via labor or secured outside funds to pay the balance. The product of their labor went towards both the costs of their incarceration and their accrued debt. Increasing access and lenience throughout the history of bankruptcy law have made prison terms for unaggravated indigence illegal over most of the world.

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 45519371

Since the late 20th century, the term debtors' prison has also sometimes been applied by critics to criminal justice systems in which a court can sentence someone to prison over willfully unpaid criminal fees, usually following the order of a judge.[2] For example, in some jurisdictions within the United States, people can be held in contempt of court and jailed after willful non-payment of child support, garnishments, confiscations, fines, or back taxes. Additionally, though properly served civil duties over private debts in nations such as the United States will merely result in a default judgment being rendered in absentia if the defendant willfully declines to appear by law,[3] a substantial number of indigent debtors are legally incarcerated for the crime of failing to appear at civil debt proceedings as ordered by a judge. In this case, the crime is not indigence, but disobeying the judge's order to appear before the court.[4][5][6][7][8] Critics argue that the "willful" terminology is subject to individual mens rea determination by a judge, rather than statute, and that since this presents the potential for judges to incarcerate legitimately indigent individuals, it amounts to a de facto "debtors' prison" system.
