The problem with most people that get student loans is that they are mutts. From the very beginning the mutts have no plan to repay the loan, get ahead in life, and go cash only in everything they do. Let alone getting loans for only what they need, most of these losers in debt spent a grip of their loans on lifestyle enhancements cause they're idiots. I know a guy, he's a drug dealer, and he sent his wife to a major accredited University medical school. They paid for most of her tuition in cash but got some loans as well. They promptly paid back the loans when she graduated, she's now a doctor and they have no debt. Point is it's all about how you play the game. Loans are tools or they make you a tool.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 71788427

Yeah the drug dealer did it right in this case. Now that wifey is a doctor he can let her be the dealer (prescriber).

Some people get student loans for the "lifestyle enhancements" as in, they are poor and can maybe get food stamps but have nowhere to live. Student loans will pay for food and housing as well as tuition and books. So they end up owing their living expenses.

They could either have been a "bum" with no debt, or a "student" accumulating debt they'll never be able to pay because they're not good at academic subjects, not cut out for university studies.

Bet they own a pain management clinic now. Legal cover for the drug dealing. Queue the crack heads.

Once you take their licenses though, there will be no more wages. Liberal thinking.

The experience is so expensive, and the payments vary so much from student to student, that a spirit of unfairness pervades the situation. Some kids are incurring life-altering debt, some other kids with a "hook" are getting it for free. So if there's some way to beat the system, there's not a lot of moral social pressure involved.

Colleges think this is OK because it allows them to target aid where they want, to "mold" their student body. But people notice.

a simple solution is to make those loan dodgers pay a monthly fee calculated from their debt to get their licenses back, but back only on a month to month basis.

Re: Student loan companies convince Florida to suspend the licenses of nearly 1,000 doctors and nurses, and then garnish 100% of the wages.
In France they have a much simpler university system from what I am told. College consists of classes and exams. It doesn't consist of a lush campus, dorms, lots of activities, deans in charge of making sure certain valued students are protected from academic consequences of failure, etc.

Just classes and exams. The exams are hard, the classes crowded. The strong survive and graduate. The degree is worth something. The system is simpler, so it's more common for a student to have a job, his own apartment (or shared), and basically run his own life while working at getting thru the college.

We would be better off with such a system here. Then there would be no expectation that for "equity" reasons, we would be lending people money they can never repay, for food, housing and all living expenses as well as tuition and books.

That's sort of like Lamar Alexander's idea that student loan payments would be payroll-deducted, like Social Security.

OK, for any of 1000 reasons, she might never have graduated medical school, or failed her national boards enough to wash out forever and not get a license at all.

How will she now pay off these loans? There's no plan for that in the "student loan program". I'm not saying to forgive them, but expecting her to pay off everything over 10 years with little or no income is unreasonable.

We need to make repayment terms reasonable, and in some cases just write them off - like if she went blind.

LAKELAND, Fla. (WFTS) — Nearly 1,000 health care workers have lost their license to practice in Florida because they can’t repay their student loans – a new crackdown potentially putting hundreds out of work, the I-Team found.

The move to suspend health care licenses comes after federal student loan companies spent years lobbying states to adopt laws to punish those who default on student loans by taking away their professional licenses.

But an ABC Action News review found Florida is the only state enforcing those laws.

Investigative Reporter Adam Walser uncovered the state’s Board of Health suspended more than 900 health care licenses – including professional certifications for registered nurses, Certified Nursing Assistants, pharmacists and opticians – in the just the past two years alone.

That pissed me off when I went to a business school. This Hispanic young woman had a free college ride because she was an immigrant, BUT, she came from a wealthy family overseas.

Pissed me off to no end.

And she had better grades, and worked harder applying for scholarships, and made a better impression on the scholarship boards . . . .

Re: Student loan companies convince Florida to suspend the licenses of nearly 1,000 doctors and nurses, and then garnish 100% of the wages.
The college tuition model is partly at fault. On a campus, kids are paying all different tuition rates.

Some are paying full price. Usually, those are ordinary (not great) students whose parents have a good income, so the FAFSA "expected family contribution" is high.

Some really good students, or relatively good minority students, are getting substantial merit aid.

Some kids are getting student loans and grants because they don't have a lot of money. Most colleges give a lot of loans, not grants.

There are other special categories too. Athletes, etc.

How do you think we got so many sub-par off-shore medical doctors? Made me leave the medical profession altogether.

In Canada or USA? If you had student loan debt, what other way was there to pay it off? If it was paid off, it still pays pretty well.

Besides, hundreds of projects and only 7 or so went bk. A lot of that had to do with unexpected real-estate downturns in NYC. Tough place to do business, Trump did very well.

And as far as the Russia tower goes, I'm sure he investigated hundreds of projects and then dropped it. That's why you have people look around, to see what makes sense and what doesn't.

Trump has gone into several construction projects not intending to pay the contract price, you know, same thing trump tards are all up in arms about student loan borrowers.

Trump stiffs EVERYBODY. He doesn't pay contractors the money he owes, he doesn't pay banks the money he owes.
It is VERY WELL documented in 100's and 100's of lawsuits.

Re: Student loan companies convince Florida to suspend the licenses of nearly 1,000 doctors and nurses, and then garnish 100% of the wages.

OK, for any of 1000 reasons, she might never have graduated medical school, or failed her national boards enough to wash out forever and not get a license at all.

How will she now pay off these loans? There's no plan for that in the "student loan program". I'm not saying to forgive them, but expecting her to pay off everything over 10 years with little or no income is unreasonable.

We need to make repayment terms reasonable, and in some cases just write them off - like if she went blind.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 77335283

I bet she has a nice financed SUV. She needs to prioritize. I paid for my own college myself, with no loans. Worked, saved, attended, when money got low, worked, saved, attended again.
 Quoting: RepublicofTexas

You can't do that with medical school. If you work, you fail. You get only one chance to get in, and if you take a break, you're out.

It's a 24/7 commitment for the duration, with zero breaks. BTW, did you read the top post here? I didn't speculate on what the bitch did - I speculated on what would have happened if she didn't, or couldn't finish medical school. There's no way to reorganize the payments in a reasonable way after a life crisis.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 77335283

I am pretty sure that national boards can be retaken. It's certainly better to pass on the first try, but you can retake.

But yeah, once in med school, kids never take time out. They just let the loan balance accumulate.

Once you take their licenses though, there will be no more wages. Liberal thinking.
