I've driven this stretch 7 or 8 times in the summer. Pretty crazy video.

It is funny because I was just talking last week about the possibility of avalanche in the i70 corridor. It always seemed like prime territory. Barring anyone being injured... pretty amazing.

Is I70 up near Estes Park? Is that the part of the state where this happened?

I’m more worried about the rock slides along 36 when the snow melts up here by Estes Park.

Re: i70 avalanche in colorado caught on video
There were actually TWO (2) avalanches right at the same spot on I-70 between Copper Mountain and Frisco (below Eisenhower tunnel just before going up over Vail Pass). One in the morning, which just sent a big cloud of snow over I-70, and once that cloud dissipated with just an inch or two so on the road the traffic resumed, and a SECOND avalanche in the afternoon which put up to 3 feet of snow on parts of the Interstate.

The TWO different slides came down from different parts of the mountain above I-70.

I-70 in that spot has LOTS of traffic on it on Sunday Afternoon, the time when the second avalanche occurred, with skiers from Vail/Beavercreek and Copper Mountain all heading back to Denver after a weekend of skiing up in the mountains.

Luckily nobody was hurt, but from other video it took a while to dig out some of the vehicles that had snow up to the windows on their car doors.

This can also be dangerous. A family died once when they sat in an idle car while dad dug out the car. The carbon monoxide went under and then up through the car and killed the family.

Sitting in an idle car buried in snow can be lethal.

I drive this all the time. In my 20 years of living here I have never seen an avalanche at this point in the highway. We've gotten way more snow this year than in several decades. There are avalanches all over the place - on purpose and spontaneous. Berthoud Pass, Loveland Pass, Wolf Creek Pass, and Lizard Head Pass were all closed a couple days ago. Never seen anything like it.

This. The highway was closed in both directions at the Eisenhower Tunnel.

I've heard the snow out there this year has been really uniquely crazy. Lots of alternating light and heavy snows basically keeping lots of layers of snows rather than it settling down into one packed snow.

Re: i70 avalanche in colorado caught on video
I used to live in Utah.

Road-blocking avalanches are a frequent occurrence in Little Cottonwood Canyon
which leads to the unbelievably fantastic ski resorts Alta and Snowbird.

These are located in the Wasatch Range just outside of Salt Lake City.
The mountains are situated just right, blocking weather systems which dump
tremendous amounts of moisture in the form of snow as they move east.

The Utah Dept of Transportation and Ski Patrol use World War II M101 Howitzers
to intentionally trigger avalanches, after which they will clear the roads
with massive front loaders.

if you have never been in this area, it is well worth the trip any time of year.

For those who enjoy the outdoors, it is an absolute gem.

I lived there back in the 80's. I was skiing Alta one Sunday and it was dumping on us. At 4:00 PM, we went to leave, noticed few vehicles in the lot (I guess everyone heard and scampered down before the avalanche gates close. The snow was halfway up the door on my Chevy S-10 Blazer. The road had been closed and had to sleep in the lodge for night.

Called down to work on Monday, telling them I couldn't get off the mountain, then helped dig out the lifts and had the best ski day of my life. Besides the few guys who lived up there, there were perhaps 25 skiers.

Ah, the good old days. A ticket at Alta was $15 for the day.
