In 1922,, when Britain was negotiating with the Irish rebels over creatin an Irish Free State, the question was where exactly to draw the boundary.
So, this is how they drew the boundary...
- A committee would be formed in the weeks after the Independence of the Irish Free State consisting of British and Irish representatives to decide this boundary. And, in the intervening weeks, before the committee met, they would have a default backstop where the north-eastern 6 counties would remain part of Britain.
That backstop was initiated in 1922. The committee on the drawing of the "official" border has still to meet, and that backstop has now been in effect for the last 97 years. |
