Ehhhh, see.. thats why western belief systems are kind of a hard buy in these days man. They leave logical people with too many unanswered questions. Read Zhuan Falun, or even study some Buddhist teachings, and the world/universe makes perfect sense.

Some cliffnotes embellished with my own understanding though:
When you view the world from a karmic perspective, then youve got people mostly suffering to repay their debts.
But then you arrive at the question of seemingly innocent people suffering. But if youve reincarnated and have accrued some karmic debt in your previous lives, then its a little more reasonable.
But then you’ll wonder: why are we in this seemingly endless loop to begin with, why wouldnt a god step in and end this suffering if he cares?

There are a few different answers to this, but the relevant one in this convo is that if the human one were a dimension where people reach after falling through numerous higher dimensions because of the decay of their morality compared to the standard of the universe, and this was a dimension where people are blocked off from the universal principals that were clear to them at higher levels, they would now struggle to see the value in doing the right thing, and could get caught up in the daily nonsense of human life, and continue to reincarnate until they dropped below the moral requirement to exist at the human level, and then their soul would cease to exist. OR, they would seek to understand the universe around them, and enlighten to what is higher and eventually escape this dimension and be free from the cycle of reincarnation. The reason the gods dont usually, ‘help’ in the sense of making your daily life easier, is because it doesnt matter in the grand scheme of things. They could bring you out of this human world to a higher dimension, but with a human mind and values, youd quickly end up back here. However, you’ll find that if you ever set off on a quest to understand and return to where you came from, the gods would definitely lend a hand. Because you dont want them to help make your life easier among humans, you want to return to your true nature.

Again, this is in my own words and thus carries notions of my own understanding. But if this helps you at all, i recommend you read the source material i referenced above to come to your own understanding.

Honestly though I think the Gnostics are right in that there is an Unknowable God that IS love.

The Carlin quote pertains to the demiurge, the god of religions, and the cruel god to which OP refers.

The universe has to be cruel, to work.

If everything was nice, then animals would not die, and there would be no point to the life.

The cycle of life is what makes the universe work, and yep it is cruel. But in reality it has to be.

We live in a universe that is created in a perfect way, it works.
