From the little research that I have done it seems that any type of solar minimum (such as a Maunder or Dalton minimum) sets off chains of events that we don't like to see on earth. Then, if it is true that we are in a binary system, the approaching system would try to drain our sun on its pass, so perhaps that would throw off the sun cycle and actually cause a grand solar minimum. Who knows, but I find it all interesting and am still learning.
