Re: Hill's Science Diet/Prescription Diet Dog Food Recall Expanded
Been a dog owner for 23 years. I have finally found the safest and best dog food....

Taste of the Wild
High Prairie Formula
Grain Free and made with Venison and Bison
Comes in a yellow 30 lb bag for about $50...you can get smaller bags too.
Buy them at Feed Stores or Tractor Supply

Just do it!
 Quoting: Joe in JT 75049243

In some cases the above food won't work. I tried grain-free venison and rabbitt for my cat made by many many different companies, and I tried raw food. My cat cannot process protein. He becomes deathly ill from it. The Hills prescription hydrolized food processes the protein in a such a way that it's digested slowly and fools the body into thinking that it's not getting protein.

Each 5.5 oz can cost approximately $3.50 a can. If I could give him store-bought food, I would. And the 7 oz bag cost $56. But it's keeping him healthy and happy. He went from violently vomiting 5 to 7 or more times a day (and all that goes along with it) to vomiting maybe once a month.

I have TWO cats like that. I think I should give them to Purina as a challenge. I've never seen two more highly allergic cats in my long life. And I've had numerous cats over the years. None of the prescription diets worked on my one cat. Losses his hair( and I mean bald with sores, not shedding) or vomits all the food up if he can't tolerate it. I finally found a holistic venison that worked for a few years, then they discontinued it. Other venison recipes didn't work. Then tried, just for the heck of it, Science diet sensitive systems. It worked. He's been on that two years now and LOW AND BEHOLD, Science Diet changes the RECIPE! To chicken! He can't eat that. So I have a few bags of old recipe left and it's back to the drawing board with him and his sister, who became allergic to her diet and is missing half her hair and I have had no luck finding something that works for her. I've been through all the "unique" proteins and I'm exhausted after several years of this crap with not one, but two felines, who can't eat the same food as the other. Not to mention the HUGE expense of having to buy bags of food that end up being money down the drain because they can't tolerate it. Chicken, fish, turkey, beef, lamb, venison, pork, rabbit, duck, quail, pea, potato, I've tried them all in limited ingredient diets and I'm down to nothing new left to try. Why do they not make a mouse diet?

I'm so sad and so sorry for these poor dogs and their owners. It breaks my heart to think of the suffering these animals went through. I will never recommend any Hills product to anyone. Hills was aware of this problem back in January... so why did'nt they recall all of these products at the same time? Why wait 2 months?

This is a good example why people need to stop trusting pet food companys. Unfortunately it will happen again and it's just awful.

One of my cats has IBD (irritable bowel disease). He's been on Hills hydrolized prescription canned and dry food for about eight months. It is the only food he can eat (including raw) without getting extremely ill. The food has saved him.

For some reason, Hills is the only company that makes certain prescription canned cat and dog food. It's so sad that dogs who have health problems to begin with end up dying from the very food that is supposed to help them.

No, HIll is not the only one who makes prescription pet foods. Purina, and Royal Canin also make many prescription diets. Your Vet may not carry other brands. Get a written prescription from your vet and go ONLINE and get your prescription pet food. If you are buying from your Vet, you will save money buying online.

Hill's is the only one that makes hydrolized canned cat food. Royal Canin makes hyrolized dry food. That's it. No other company. My cat prefers the canned but will also eat the dry.

I don't get it from my vet. He charges way more. My vet gave me a prescription. I get the canned food from Chewy and the dry food at another site made by Royal Canin.

Prescription pet food consists of many different kinds, depending on what the ailment is. Believe me, I searched the internet. For my cat's problem it is only Hill's canned and Royal Canin dry.
