(OP) User ID: 76712081 United States 04/01/2019 04:09 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | We had a fire in our apartment building last fall and our fire dept. has been totally downsized. If there had been another fire in town, we would have been screwed. Someone scoured the newspapers knowing full well about the downsizing cuz immediately after, someone called asking for a donation to the fire dept. annual fund raiser. Quoting: PiccoloGal If anyone isn’t sure if it’s legit, just never, ever give out information. I always ask them to send a request from their dept. thru the mail. Just be steadfast that you will not give them any information over the phone. If they can’t deal with that, they’re not to be trusted. Of course, hanging up works too. All the calls from firemen and policemen charities are fraudulent. There was an article in the paper about this a few weeks ago. Donate only to charities you know. I only donate to local charities. I get a lot of requests from "charities" in the mail. A lot of them send little gifts along with their request. If they can afford to send you things for free, they do not need your money. (OP) User ID: 76712081 United States 04/01/2019 04:17 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I got a call from Medicare just about an hour ago. Very professional. I let her talk for about 5 seconds and hung up. Ya, like Medicare is going to be calling ME. I'm 75, and been around the block a little. Quoting: Zerubbabel The guy who called me sounded very professional too. I guess the calls are not from the usual boiler rooms in India where it seems that most scammers calls originate from. I am glad you didn't fall for the scam ! Pass the word around about this newest scam ! People need to know ! Last Edited by tiger1 on 04/01/2019 04:19 PM Praise God from Whom all Blessings flow !!! |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 77345463 United States 04/01/2019 05:13 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | How I now treat scam phone calls: Quoting: Anonymous Coward 77365800 My phone lets me know a probable scam call as it rings, so I answer it, but remain silent (don't say "hello", don't say a word).. until a real person starts talking....after he/she says her first sentence, I say, "YOU STUPID CUNT." their usual method: It is usually a person asking for a person with a different name than mine, then they say..."Oh! maybe we can ask you for money instead!" Once I know it is a scam call I just set the phone down and walk away. In an hour or so I will go back and hang the phone up. The reason I do it that way is to tie them up as long as possible to keep them from bugging other people. . |

Quoting: hankie LOL ! I get a LOT of calls from "medicare services", to get back braces, knee braces, all kinds of medical devices and supplies. Sometimes I just hang up immediately, sometimes I tell them to not call anymore, and they still call back no matter if I hang up or tell them not to call anymore. They are relentless. The same with "credit card services", "home security systems", "medical alert devices", "extended vehicle warranties", etc. Even though I am on the "do not call list", some of these scammers call me multiple times a day. IKR? And they're all robocalls so you can't even yell at someone. The other day I actually DID get a person when I "pressed 9 to be put on the do not call list", and when I explained that I was healthy, didn't need braces, pain controls, rosacea medicine, etc and to please take my name off their list, SHE hung up on ME! And to add insult to injury I got the same robocall about 2 hours later!!!! The keywords are... "Nancy" "patient advocate" "Medicare" Here's an article about it... [link to www.whec.com (secure)] News10NBC is pulling the curtain back on what the feds call one of the biggest Medicare fraud schemes ever. We're going to show you the tactics used to get seniors to fall for it. The feds say the scheme involves kickbacks and bribes and convincing senior citizens to order medical supplies they don't need. Twenty-four people got arrested across the country this week. News10NBC was in a viewer's home when another telemarketer called. We want to show you how it worked so if the call comes to you or your parents, you're prepared. I am a humble Servant of the one True Living God. |
