'Seven dollars a piece!' Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez faces criticism for tweeting about the price of croissants at LaGuardia Airport and compar
US Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez tweeted shock at the $7 price tag of a croissant at LaGuardia Airport on Monday, comparing it to minimum wage
•Before she clarified that she wasn't implying that one had anything to do with the other, a slew of replies rolled in questioning her understanding of economics
•Federal minimum wage is $7.25 per hour and has not been updated since 2009
•However most states have set their own higher minimum pay requirements
•Ocasio-Cortez supports a nationally mandated minimum wage of $15 per hour
A new report showed that minimum wage workers would be making $33.51 an hour if their earnings had grown at the same rate of Wall Street bonuses

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez caused a stir on Monday when she compared the cost of a croissant at LaGuardia Airport in New York to minimum wage paid to hourly employees.

'Croissants at LaGuardia are going for SEVEN DOLLARS A PIECE [face screaming in fear emoji] Yet some people think getting a whole hour of personal, dedicated human labor for $15 is too expensive??' Ocasio-Cortez tweeted.

The federal minimum wage is $7.25 per hour and has not been updated since July 24, 2009, according to the US Department of Labor.

While most states have set their own higher minimum pay requirements, the US Representative for New York supports a national mandatory minimum wage of $15 per hour, as evidenced by her post.

Regardless of where people stand on the livable wages debate, however, social media users were quick to point out that the cost of a pastry at the airport doesn't seem to have much to do with the issue.

The bigger issue is that she flys to DC instead of utilizing more green means of transportation

If she had walked to the train or bus depot she would have passed dozens of places selling croissants for far less, she could have gotten a croissant and a coffee

She should be grateful that here in the US we have the option of not buying, it’s called free economy AOC.....learn it!

In other words, AOC is comparing peoples' wages to the affordability of food commodities. Yes, what are the inputs that establish food pricing to labor wages and what is a function, stable sustainable ratio? Hmmmm, taxes and regulations?

LaGuardia employees make $15/hr already, maybe that's why the croissant is so damn expensive.
