There's a retirement crisis in America where most will be unable to afford a 'solid life'
Let's start with private savings. At Vanguard, the average 401(k) account value for an investor age 65 and older is $192,877 in 2018, but that number is inflated by a small group of long-time super-savers. The median balance among the age group, where half have more and half have less, is a measly $58,035.

Average that out over 20 years — most Americans should expect to live into their 80s — and that is not a lot to pull out on a yearly basis, perhaps a little more than $3,000.

Not only that but Donald Trump changed the laws where if you get sick and have medical bills that you can't pay, they can now take your house.

Trump said he would replace Obamacare but he lied and now millions of seniors are suffering and going homeless

I think we should begin the process of creating "End of Life" centers. After a certain age, if you're done you can take the red pill.

I don't think that is a true statement. Anyway, I guess he backed out of changing the ACA now.

Just look at the families around you. Do you think they will have enough to retire?

The pursuit of money and material things does not give us a “solid” life.
When you die you take zero, nada, of your eartly physical possessions with you.
Social security used to be for the elderly who spent a lifetime of having money taken from them by the government who was supposed to “secure” the people’s money like a bank, until they became elderly. Go to your local SS office and you will be astounded by how few elderly you’ll see there! You won’t even see many Americans there, its like a foreign country!
The “crisis” is that the very one’s who promised to “secure” our money stole it!
How a country treats there youngest and oldest tells you how your country is doing. How your country treats its citizens versus foreigners tells you alot. We’re failing!

News nugget--this has been in place in my hospital district since Obama early days. I am in Volusia County Florida. In 2012 I talked to a nurse who said she would sell her home and rent before retirement, because Halifax Hospital, who already taxes us up the wazoo, was seizing houses right and left for unpaid medical bills.

Check your local hospital seizure leeway.

Nature is cruel. We were meant to start pumping out kids by age 15 and dead by about 50. As long as we fulfill our genetic imperative, nature doesn't care.

I wonder... how do we afford to pay for all these 80 year olds who didn't save for retirement using social security when the replacement rate is getting so low? Something has to give eventually.

Re: There's a retirement crisis in America where most will be unable to afford a 'solid life'
Yeah but add that retirement savings income to social security and you'll be sitting pretty with $2000 a month.

That was a joke, we probably need at least 3 times that to maintain any standard of living close to what we have now. Hopefully we will be able to do that but most people haven't prepared. It's tough to help kids out with outrageously expensive college costs at the same time you are looking to retire.

from what i've seen lately, if you get old and aren't in a lifetimes worth of debt due to "healthcare" bills, consider yourself one of the lucky ones.

Geezus people...wake up. Nothing else matters, not your phukin vacation nor your fresh manicure.

The ONLY thing you take with you when you depart this dimension is the love you shared.

Don't you KNOW that?

Yep, or even if you saved like crazy and are well set up for retirement what good is it if your health sucks.
I have a relative that has probably a few million in retirement accounts and a small pension. His whole life was about preparing for retirement and then, two years after he retired he has a serious disease.
Life sucks and the you die.

And it goes by way too fast. There's something to be said for the impulsive people who spend every cent they have and live for today. They have kids young, life happens, and they just take it day by day. If you want to be "ready" for something in order to do it, you might not ever do it.

The less money you have, the less the system can take from you when the unexpected happens. The system does not really reward people for being responsible. In fact the opposite.. aside from blatantly breaking laws and ending up in jail, the system rewards irresponsible behavior.
