I hear a lot of people talk shit about Kurt and his music. You either love it or hate it. Some say he was a shitty guitarist.

I think he was a brilliant artist. The whole style was grunge. The clothes were nasty, lazy, and sloppy. His playing was sometimes sloppy and nasty. That was the whole point. It was supposed to sound that way and be that way. It was like that on purpose not on accident. I don’t know if he could stand up there with the rest of them as far as technical skill. But I think what makes a great musician is that they were good at composing music and using it as an art form. And I think Kurt was pretty damn good. I swear I had even seen him tapping and doing techniques you wouldn’t expect. He was also really great at using dynamics. I’d say he was one of the best at using dynamics to create mood and emotion.

Music is not all about technical skill. A lot of guitarists seem to think that it is some kind of juvenile Guitar Hero shit to see who can wail the best. Who can do the most visually and sonically impressive feats? Music to me is not a contest. And the audience doesn’t give that much of a shit how difficult a song is to play. Who wants to go to a concert where the guitarist does a solo for two hours. Buckethead fans maybe? I guess you can do it. Hendrix kinda did. But you gotta be yourself not Hendrix. Some of the simplest songs are better to me and a lot of audiences than super difficult and complex technical solo type shit.

And it’s actually really encouraging. These days non-musicians can compose songs and express themselves. Or even those who have a very base skill can get some lessons and write some songs. Too often musicians act like they are better than non-musicians and it’s kind of sad and detrimental to the art form because your average person feels like they could never do it. Anybody can pick up a paintbrush and practice and learn to paint but we’ve been sold the lie that music is only for an elite club. Fuck those people. Everybody should get into it
