Perdue Admits To Misinformation With 1 Million Calves Lost! | |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 77272669 United States 04/06/2019 09:06 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The article also states that the number of lost cattle is still unknown, but puts the highest number at an unlikely 228,000. Quoting: TrustNoOneKS "'If you use the $400 million and just equivalent that out to fed cattle, that would be 228,000 fed cattle lost,' Henderson relates. Henderson does caution that type of death loss would likely be extreme. Other widespread winter storms in the recent past did not eclipse the 100,000 head lost." [link to www.drovers.com (secure)] (Emphasis added) He does state the $400 million may include more than just the actual cattle and could include property damage as well. EDITED TO ADD: In the video accompanying the written article, he said that the losses will most likely be in the 10s of thousands. Hahahahaha! How is the number still unknown but then puts a end number of cattle lost to their statement? Ha! You're being as deceptive as you're claiming Purdue is. |

If you are talking about the 228,000 number, then he just took $400 million and divided that by the value of a cow. He states over and over that they don't know the real numbers. Did he say it matter-o-factly or did he say "fuck we lost a million cows" Quoting: BRIEF The "1 million" quote actually was first reported on March 19th in a Reuters article that I can't link, but this article confirms and contains the link: Historic Midwest Flooding Has Devastating Consequences for Farmers "U.S. Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue told reporters that the governors of Nebraska and Iowa had told him that up to one million calves may have been killed, Reuters reported in another article." Purdue is a mid-western University that has a good engineering program and a lousy football team. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 77534630 Well, it's actually neither. It's Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue and I corrected the misspelled name in the title just now. I Want To Believe |

Also, importantly, the losses won't be done with direct death by drowning due to deaths continuing from skin loss from submersion in icy water, and also miscarriages due to the stress of the flooding. We call them abortions in livestock, but I don't want people who know nothing about that to get the wrong idea. No one is taking their cattle to the vet for an elective abortion. On the consumer side of the cattle loss, the truth is we actually have too much cattle for the price that farmers and ranchers get per pound to be beneficial. The bad news is a hell of a lot of grain was lost, and that will increase the cost of feed, which will result in a reduction and upswing in cost next year. Losing 30% of feed/grain stock is going to hurt. But since markets are controlled to a large extent, we'll just have to see how they play it. I do appreciate you bringing forth the information on Perdue stating misinformation. Thanks! I do appreciate you bringing forth the information on Perdue stating misinformation. Thanks! Good point on the deaths following the incident. While looking into the Livestock Indemnity Program that will help the ranchers with the losses, I did see that they may claim any deaths that are believed to be due to the incident which occurs within 60 days of the incident. Extreme Weather Events and the Livestock Indemnity Program "The Livestock Indemnity Program (LIP), administered by the USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA), provides compensation to eligible livestock producers who have suffered livestock death losses in excess of normal mortality due to adverse weather, including extreme cold, storms and flooding. . . . Once a qualifying weather event has been identified, adult livestock dying within 60 days of that qualifying event can be considered eligible for loss benefits."
