Paramedics who were in the courtroom said more needs to be done to protect them.

“We are powerless to protect ourselves,” said another paramedic, Jeffrey Birre.

Birre spoke before Multnomah County Judge Kathleen Dailey, shedding a dark light on his job.

“Everyone treated us with respect because regardless of circumstance, we treated everyone the same. We were never targeted. This has changed. We are targeted as easy prey on the city streets of Portland,” he said.
