He should not stay totally in the background under the pretext of humility, as he will become dull, colorless and stupid. But it is not desirable either that he be too conceited on the pretext that he follows a spiritual teaching, as not only will he become ridiculous, but also fanatical and wicked. To be moderate is one of the most difficult tasks in the world. Even in initiatic schools of the past, very few disciples avoided giving way to pride or exaggerated humility - which is so often nothing but hidden pride!
