Hyperintelligent people?

What if there is a group of hyperintelligent people who, unlike most extremely intelligent people, are also socially functional and interested in power and control? Let's say 1 person in about 300 million has got it. That would mean that there's only about 20 such people in the world.

What if they have decided that they are the stewards of the humanity, and are secretly running everything through layers and layers of proxies?

At their level, the motivations and goals of the ordinary people would literally seem like child's play, and controlling us would be like babysitting us.

It occurred to me yesterday when I was babysitting my kid and her friends. I avoid barking orders or threats to control kids nor do I bribe them with treats (in the end you end up paying more and more). Most of the time it just doesn't work and makes everyone feel stressed. Instead, I just fool them - via suggestions or questions - into thinking that the correct action was their idea and that it's a good one. Sometimes, when I want them to do something else, I just find an object I know my kid will be interested in and leave it lying around so that they'll discover it.

I can do it, because I am so much more intelligent and experienced than they are. What if we're being manipulated in a similar way.

For instance, the political system seems like such a ploy. No matter how we vote, things remain pretty much the same. The media trends also give me a non-organic feeling, suggesting an underlying pattern of coordination and control. Money and organized religion? They're obvious control mechanisms.
