Sen Hawley Proposes Bill Allowing People To Block Tech Companies From Constantly Tracking Their Location
Republican Missouri Sen. Josh Hawley announced a bill Monday that allows Americans to block tech companies from tracking people’s locations without direct consent.

Hawley’s legislation creates a program similar to the national Do Not Call list that gives people the power to prevent online companies from collecting any more data than what is otherwise necessary for the companies’ services. It also prohibits entities like Google from profiling Americans who activate the so-called Do Not Track program.

“Big tech companies collect incredible amounts of deeply personal, private data from people without giving them the option to meaningfully consent,” Hawley noted in a press statement.

He said these companies have employed “creepy surveillance tactics on their users,” adding that “too often the extent of this data extraction is only known after a tech company irresponsibly handles the data.”

The legislation, if passed, could seriously alter the business models of many online companies. The Missouri Republican’s bill also bans Google and others from transferring data to other companies unless the first company is an intended intermediary.

Apparently it does not have a bill number yet. As soon as it does, I will be writing my senators, and congress-bitch to support this idea.

Let's see where this goes.

Sometimes bills are drafted to extort cash from industries... a bill is proposed, and magically massive donations show up in the congresscritter's reelection fund - usually through an intermediary PAC.

Five stars - why would anybody want to be constantly tracked? Save it for going into the back country.

They'll do it anyway, so it doesn't really matter.

Even when you "turn off location", you're still being tracked. They can triangulate you simply with the cell towers too.

They are monopolies that need to be broken up. There is a huge price paid for the convenience of all this technology. I use it but try to avoid it as often as I can. GPs is just too helpful when you travel a lot.

I wish they'd at least start making phones with removable batteries again.

I always try to make sure I'm "signed out" of my devices except when I need to update or download something.

Something useful I discovered is that if you have an android device, you can create a new Google account without needing to provide a phone number to activate it.
