Don't even tell me that those fucktards in Louisiana built a spillway that just dumps out into some towns or shit like that.

Even THEY can't be that dumb, right?

The US Army Corps of Engineers built the flood control structures in Louisiana and, yes, there are some small communities of people living in the region, along with approximately 25,000 acres of prime farmland that is expected to flood.

This is what happens when someone reads a headline and instantly becomes an engineering expert and espouses to the world how smart they are and how dumb everyone else is.

The Morganza Spillway is a planned dumping area through a natural flood plain which leads to another river, Atchafalaya. If left unchecked/unmanaged the very large Mississippi River could change course and create a natural disaster which could affect millions (not just homes and communities but nationally jobs and economics). If the MS River should start a new path all the cities from Memphis and south would be affected, all the way to New Orleans. Basically it could leave the MS River from Baton Rouge to New Orleans to shallow to allow the barges to navigate (think jobs and economics).

The Morganza Spillway would allow water to flood from the MS River to the Atchafalaya River and relieve the pressure down river. I think it's about 5 miles from Morganza to the Atchafalaya. People have used that land, which for the most part just sits unused (flood plain), and understand that at times this flood plain will be used for God's intended purpose.

If left unchecked it would be a disaster of epic proportions and would leave the river to chart it's on course... there is probably no way to know exactly what that course would be, meaning this could indeed leave the river to go through a major city. The Army Corp of engineers have been managing this for 100 years.

Next time just don't read the headlines and believe the sky is falling. Understand your talking point and then fill us with your prescience knowledge.

Thanks, and now enjoy your crawfish.

My Dad sent this email to me last night:

"Hey ___,
Yes, the water is extremely high, we were there for grandchildren graduations & Mother’s Day we just left there Tues......

There is a portion of Hwy 70 between Morgan City & Belle River that only trucks can get through....between Belle River & Bayou Pigeon has been non passable for a couple of weeks...

The area in Grand Bayou around Dow Chemical has water over the road for about 1/2 mile cars were still able to get through for now.....
the situation is quite serious, once the Morganza is opened no telling how high the water will get!"

I have linked an article with pictures that show some areas getting water as a result of opening the Morganza. The first picture shows the route that Mississippi River wants to take but has been altered so that NOLA can still be a port city. The River will follow its natural course one of these days.

My husband is a sugar cane farmer. The farm consists of about 3000 acres. The very back unplanted part might end up flooded as it borders St. Mary Parish. No doubt wildlife, including gators and snakes, will be pushed towards the farm. In 2011, the last time the Morganza was opened, my husband called in Troy Landry of Swamp People to capture gators that had moved into the fields.

If you can see this video-

This is what it looks like as far as the eye can see on both sides of a Missisippi Delta highway recently driven. Where occasionally a field is visible unflooded, it's usually not planted either.

I think there was a thread on GLP this week saying only 30% of normal spring planting in U.S. has taken place this year, and food prices expected to skyrocket.

Yep, that spot you are talking about where only trucks can pass has been flooded for weeks. It's between Bayou Pigeon and Morgan City. When I go to Pierre Part or Morgan City, that is the route I usually take. Talked to my sis today and she said the water was close to the top in that area. I'm originally from Pigeon and still have lots of family in the area. More alligators than usual are showing up on land near people atm. The article I posted further up has an interview with a crawfisherman from Pigeon. Been worried for weeks now about all the high water down there.

Was thinking about going to the Pierre Part Festival this weekend til sis told me the road to Morgan City was closed. I like driving that back way more than the other route. Thanks for the update from your husband.

Re: Mississippi River flooding doom! COE may open the Morganza spillway!!
The U.S government has created this situation at the request of the AG and shipping industries for coal and other commodities. They created a system that could function as a means to ship large amounts cheaply on barges. What they did not realize was the effect of channelizing the largest river in the U.S. and how naturally occuring weather patterns would cause massive flooding due to the increase kenetic energy of moving more water downstream.

So the AG industry benefited from the operation of the Mississipi as a shipping canal for decades, now rhey complain? Ironic.

Pointe Coupee farmers move livestock, clear fields as they brace for spillway opening impact
[link to www.theadvocate.com (secure)]

Teaspoons clamor against ceramic coffee mugs, loose gravel crunches under the weight of slowing truck tires, and there’s an unspoken but shared anticipation when they shake hands and ask the question: "How’s that spillway going to get you?”

The farmers of Pointe Coupee Parish have long gathered around the coffee pot at the local co-op on La. 1 each morning, surrounded by the sugarcane fields and train tracks that leave little to the imagination as far as what drives industry in the area.

But Friday, as news of the nearby Morganza Spillway’s likely opening stirred through the rest of the state, it thrust Pointe Coupee into action.

Tens of thousands of acres of crawfish ponds, cotton, rice, soybeans, corn, cattle grazing, and sugar cane lie in the area that will likely soon take on feet of water to relieve pressure on Mississippi River levees south of here.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers won’t make an official decision about opening the spillway until Tuesday, but waiting isn’t a luxury.

“We don’t have that kind of time,” Kenny Self said Friday. “There’s just too much to do to wait. You have to go through the motions just in case.”

Self has nine apps on his smartphone – an entire screen’s worth – dedicated to what's happening along the Mississippi. There are gauges for Memphis, Arkansas City, Red River Landing and Baton Rouge. He has forecasts as close as five days and as far out as 25. He watches the flow rate in Baton Rouge.

He, like many of his neighbors, checks each daily. Since Thursday, he's been working with crew to remove close to 9,000 crawfish traps from ponds, to affix floats to his hunting camp and to move expensive and heavy equipment before the water flows in.

Self’s is the physically closest farm on the "afterbay" side of the spillway, so will be the first hit when the floodgates open. Locals refer to the spillway’s land mass as "forebay" and "afterbay" to describe the acreage leading up to the gates and directly beyond them.

Re: Mississippi River flooding doom! COE may open the Morganza spillway!!
Spoke to my husband, T., about this last night. He said the Morganza is not just being opened to prevent flooding but because the Morganza itself, which is not in good shape, is in danger of collapse because the water level is so high- w/in inches of overtopping.

The farm has taken on a few inches and could get up to 1 foot more. T. and his workers have begun running pumps to try to get ahead of anymore water.

In recent years, some experts have talked of starting a controlled total or partial rerouting of the Miss. River. NOLA and Baton Rouge are, of course, not in favor. The problem is when the River decides to change course, and it is inevitable, there will be massive and catastrophic flooding. Not only will lives and property will be lost but the intricate pipelines bringing natural gas and gasoline to the rest of the country will be compromised. In other words, a cluster f_ck of Biblical proportions. This really is a case where the Feds should step in and tell NOLA and B.R to get stuffed.
