This is what happens when someone reads a headline and instantly becomes an engineering expert and espouses to the world how smart they are and how dumb everyone else is.

The Morganza Spillway is a planned dumping area through a natural flood plain which leads to another river, Atchafalaya. If left unchecked/unmanaged the very large Mississippi River could change course and create a natural disaster which could affect millions (not just homes and communities but nationally jobs and economics). If the MS River should start a new path all the cities from Memphis and south would be affected, all the way to New Orleans. Basically it could leave the MS River from Baton Rouge to New Orleans to shallow to allow the barges to navigate (think jobs and economics).

The Morganza Spillway would allow water to flood from the MS River to the Atchafalaya River and relieve the pressure down river. I think it's about 5 miles from Morganza to the Atchafalaya. People have used that land, which for the most part just sits unused (flood plain), and understand that at times this flood plain will be used for God's intended purpose.

If left unchecked it would be a disaster of epic proportions and would leave the river to chart it's on course... there is probably no way to know exactly what that course would be, meaning this could indeed leave the river to go through a major city. The Army Corp of engineers have been managing this for 100 years.

Next time just don't read the headlines and believe the sky is falling. Understand your talking point and then fill us with your prescience knowledge.
