My Dad sent this email to me last night:
"Hey ___,
Yes, the water is extremely high, we were there for grandchildren graduations & Mother’s Day we just left there Tues......
There is a portion of Hwy 70 between Morgan City & Belle River that only trucks can get through....between Belle River & Bayou Pigeon has been non passable for a couple of weeks...
The area in Grand Bayou around Dow Chemical has water over the road for about 1/2 mile cars were still able to get through for now.....
the situation is quite serious, once the Morganza is opened no telling how high the water will get!"
I have linked an article with pictures that show some areas getting water as a result of opening the Morganza. The first picture shows the route that Mississippi River wants to take but has been altered so that NOLA can still be a port city. The River will follow its natural course one of these days.
My husband is a sugar cane farmer. The farm consists of about 3000 acres. The very back unplanted part might end up flooded as it borders St. Mary Parish. No doubt wildlife, including gators and snakes, will be pushed towards the farm. In 2011, the last time the Morganza was opened, my husband called in Troy Landry of Swamp People to capture gators that had moved into the fields.
