Spoke to my husband, T., about this last night. He said the Morganza is not just being opened to prevent flooding but because the Morganza itself, which is not in good shape, is in danger of collapse because the water level is so high- w/in inches of overtopping.
The farm has taken on a few inches and could get up to 1 foot more. T. and his workers have begun running pumps to try to get ahead of anymore water.
In recent years, some experts have talked of starting a controlled total or partial rerouting of the Miss. River. NOLA and Baton Rouge are, of course, not in favor. The problem is when the River decides to change course, and it is inevitable, there will be massive and catastrophic flooding. Not only will lives and property will be lost but the intricate pipelines bringing natural gas and gasoline to the rest of the country will be compromised. In other words, a cluster f_ck of Biblical proportions. This really is a case where the Feds should step in and tell NOLA and B.R to get stuffed.
