I thought so too. I've watched a few of them few the years, but I think this one is the best for feet on the ground journalism. The crews of medical students and doctors was new footage for me. I had no idea.

That was Tank Man. In the genuine video, he was not run over by the tank. He was arrested and taken away. I read that he was shot, but I don't know if it is true.

Look up a couple of posts and there is video footage on the Tank Man incident.

I've always hoped he was not shot.

No doubt about it. America would become killing fields.

Young people disbelieve that this is what happens.

It would be good for them to see it, but.....

Standing on a hotel balcony on the edge of Tiananmen Square in China, photographer Jeff Widener didn’t realize what he was about to capture would become one of the most iconic images in the world.

Almost 30 years on, he recalls how his “Tank Man” photo almost didn’t happen.

The photographer, who was shooting for The Associated Press, had suffered a blow to his head from a rock the night before, as he covered the violence and killing unfolding in Beijing.

“I was nervous, I was scared from the previous night,” he said.

The Chinese regime turned violent against student protesters in Tiananmen Square in June 1989 and civilians were killed en masse.

“I wasn’t thinking clearly, because I was hit with a rock the night before. I waited for them to shoot him, but they didn’t shoot him. Waiting and waiting and waiting.”

The image he snapped on the morning of June 5 was the moment a lone man holding his shopping bags stepped in front of a line of tanks. It’s a moment recorded for history.

There are five known photographers of the image widely known as the “Tank Man.” Jeff Widener’s shot became the most famous. It’s been named one of most influential images of all time by Time magazine.

Well, so much for the idea that trade and dialogue will civilize the Communist Party.

That was the trend of thought then. It should be obvious by now that Communism of any type has anything to offer the US.

Disidents and activists have been spirited out of Beijing, put on house arrest, or firmly warned to not make any trouble.

The mothers of those young people who are still missing still beg the CCP for an accounting, still plead for closure after all these years. The CCP warns them again to shut up and don't make trouble.

The young people in China know little about the matter. It is a forbidden topic in China in schools and on social media. Fortunately we are still free to discuss it.

For all their efforts, the memory of China massacring its young people for asking for simple freedoms won't die.

I think Xi misspoke. What he meant to say is young people in China should be grateful for the "Kinder, gentler" communist party of the 21st century and they should be. Organ harvesting is much easier to stomach than Mao's purges and wide spread starvation. We all know Xi would much prefer mass graves over mass protests

When the 1989 student-led democracy movement took over Beijing's iconic Tiananmen Square, Jiang Lin was working as a reporter for an official army newspaper, the Liberation Daily. Jiang was there when thousands turned out on April 15 to mourn late liberal premier Hu Yaobang, and when then premier Li Peng announced martial law would be imposed in Beijing. On the afternoon of June 3, just before the People's Liberation Army began massacring civilians, Jiang made her way to Beijing's Muxidi intersection, just in time to witness some of the worst bloodshed of the crackdown:

Local people kept yelling "Fascists!" and the troops were firing in the direction of the shouts, raking the crowd with machine-gun fire. We hit the deck until we thought that the army vehicles had moved on, having cleared a way through to Tiananmen Square.

So we headed off in the direction of Tiananmen Square, weeping as we walked. All along our route were scenes of incredible cruelty. My parents are both in the military; we had served in this same army that was now turning its guns on the civilian population. My mind just couldn't accept this reality. I was unbearably sad.

[When we arrived below the Tiananmen gate], we peered through to see gunfire everywhere, and soldiers' helmets silhouetted against the constant sound of gunfire, which never let up. At this point we were surrounded by officers of the People's Armed Police who started attacking us indiscriminately with electric batons, the high-voltage kind.

Xi's not been put to the test yet, but we can be sure that nobody makes high rank in the CCP for being tender hearted. And there are still strongholds of these loyal to the faction of the previous president, just like here.

And the organ harvest of Falun Gong still goes on as usual.

Tiananmen is the visible reminder of China's determination to keep deadly control over its citizens.
