Re: Ready for the Real Hunger Games? 19 Million Acres Will Not Be Planted This Year
Farms in the grain belt are so waterlogged 6 million acres of corn may not be planted. Add to that soybeans, and you are talking about massive grain shortages.

6 million acres of corn produce, on average, 54 billion pounds of dry kernel corn. That's 168 pounds of corn per every person in the US that will not exist next year.

Add to that 4 million acres of soybeans potentially not planted. That would be 34 pounds per person lost.

UPDATE, July 4th

There's indications this is a global crop failure tied to the solar minimum. Crop losses may be more than the 20% - 30% as was estimated last month - some estimates are more than 50%.

Food shortages later this month? Food riots by August - September?

"Professor Valentina Zharkova says that what we are facing is a “super grand solar minimum”, and if that is true we are going to be facing climate chaos like we have never seen before. During previous “grand solar minimums” the globe was gripped by devastating famines and vast numbers of people died. Could a similar scenario potentially be in our future?"

Finally made it to Walmart today, and the potato product shelf is similar to others we have seen - not quite as bad, but definitely with blank spots. What I call the "good" brand of instant mashed potatoes, Idahoan, had several missing flavors, though I found most of my favorites. No "loaded baked" variety.

I didn't check the canned food aisle, but soup aisle seemed well-stocked.

This is western Washington out on the coast.

The discount grocery I usually shop has been having sales on chicken parts. Yesterday I purchased chicken drumsticks for .99 per pound - cannot beat that! Need to go back for another family-sized package.

I hope people are reading and thinking and realizing the need for purchasing your foods now, while they are available and not 50-100% more than today!

Re: Ready for the Real Hunger Games? 19 Million Acres Will Not Be Planted This Year
Many years ago, the government stored emergency grain for the peasants but they let that go and now they pay farmers to re-wild their land.

This article is from 2006, I couldn't find the latest stats on what we are paying farmers to grow crap grass and knapweed.

Nationwide, the federal government has paid at least $1.3 billion in subsidies for rice and other crops since 2000 to individuals who do no farming at all, according to an analysis of government records by The Washington Post. [link to www.washingtonpost.com]

The U.S. strategic grain reserve was initially created during the days of the Great Depression and they robbed us of even this tiny security.

(less than 50%)

The modern concept of a strategic grain reserve was first proposed in the 1930s by Wall Street legend Benjamin Graham. Graham’s idea hinged on the clever management of buffer stocks of grain to tame our daily bread’s tendencies toward boom and bust. When grain prices rose above a threshold, supplies could be increased by bringing reserves to the market — which, in turn, would dampen prices. And when the price of grain went into free-fall and farmers edged toward bankruptcy, the need to fill the depleted reserve would increase the demand for corn and wheat, which would prop up the price of grain.

Following Graham’s theory, President Franklin D. Roosevelt created a grain reserve that helped rally the price of wheat and saved American farms during the Depression. In the inflationary 1970s, the USDA revamped FDR’s program into the Farmer-Owned Grain Reserve, which encouraged farmers to store grain in government facilities by offering low-cost and even no-interest loans and reimbursement to cover the storage costs. But over the next quarter of a century the dogma of deregulated global markets came to dominate American politics, and the 1996 Freedom to Farm Act abolished our national system of holding grain in reserve.

As for all that wheat held in storage, it became part of the Bill Emerson Humanitarian Trust, a food bank and global charity under the authority of the secretary of Agriculture. The stores were gradually depleted until 2008, when the USDA decided to convert all of what was left into its dollar equivalent. And so the grain that once stabilized prices for farmers, bakers and American consumers ended up as a number on a spreadsheet in the Department of Agriculture.

Now that the grain is GMO and putrid, I guess it doesn't really matter much if at all.

Wise post, as long as people are considering grid down possibility, and balancing the freezer stock with a great deal of canned and dehydrated stock.

Setting the freezer to coldest will be wise - so things keep as long as possible without electricity.

Bear in mind that any food still containing ice crystals can safely be refrozen if the power comes back on. I did this after a five-day power outage from a big wind storm. The moment the power was restored I opened the freezer and went through everything. Saved at least 2/3 of the contents. I had put a quilt over the chest freezer to help the cold remain. Worked well. Now I have an upright - much harder to wrap.

The US strategic supply?
Fema camp out?
For how long if a nationwide event?
That is 350 million people times 3 meals a day or like 2000 calories per person per day or
700,000,000,000 calories a day.
4,900,000,000,000 a week,
19,600,000,000,000 a month,
235,200,000,000,000 a year.
My math may be off but you need about one million calories per person per year. For a prepping guide ez math 6 people six million calories.

Who and how will all this be Paid for it is apx $7k for rice and beans then transported? Distributed? amazon wont be delivering shit.

What if it is a world wide event?

The only State that did or does have a years food for it residents is or was Alaska. Under Governor Pailan. Forgive my spelling.

Second I would think Utah's Mormons self food storage teaching.

Anything our goverment says, I add or deduct one or two zeros.

Farmers Prevented from Planting Crops on More than 19 Million Acres

WASHINGTON, Aug. 12, 2019 – Agricultural producers reported they were not able to plant crops on more than 19.4 million acres in 2019, according to a new report released by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). This marks the most prevented plant acres reported since USDA’s Farm Service Agency (FSA) began releasing the report in 2007 and 17.49 million acres more than reported at this time last year.

See how the USDA is walking these figures? First it was 6-10 million acres. Now they come up with almost double that.

I wouldn't be surprised if the overall grain yield is 30% to 50% lower this year.

Yes, I did go to my club warehouse supermarket and stock up on dry and canned goods.

Many of these planted acres were sewn with no hope of a crop.

They way crop insurance works, you get paid on what was planted but did not get the expected harvest.

Many farmers then planted in waterlogged fields in hopes of some sort of an insurance payback in fall.

Now that the total unplanted acres are near 20 million we are looking at 400 lbs. of corn and soybeans per person in the USA that will not exist this year.
