Hey Uncle FS...I've been pondering all the W's (who, what, when, why now shit) over this sudden spate of tourist-from-hell stories centering around the DR. I've been there, was on one of the very port-o'calls when the island opened up to cruise lines. OMG, crew I went w/ totally unprepared for 3rd world poverty at that level. Freaked out at the armed militia in small boats surrounding the cruise ship while at port. Had to intervene when newbies at 3rd world traveling were trying to refill their water bottles at the public fountain where locals were filling up their jugs. Explained how they owed me drinks later for saving them trips to ship's sick bay. So, what gives? What's so special about the DR? And thought struggles against the results, trying to avoid those unpleasant results while keeping on with that way of thinking.
