Wonderful thread. I learned more about the dandylions. Thanks so much. I would love to know all that you have learned. It is a work in progress. Please do continue. I have a lot to catch up on now but will happily do so.

Re: Dandelions and Civilization (short vid)UPDATED pg 11 Dandelion and Spike Proteins
In order to start to develop into the plant realm (and hence the whole planet really) the three interviews I posted to from radiorbit are great. If you are an old skool GLP'er like me you can find a Kent Steadman interview or two from the site as well.

I'll take questions since I'm kind of bored and worried about my town right now on water restrictions and forest fires...so I just stay home. I have a small but meagre passive income stream and it is more then I need so I have what I cherish the most in life...time. My son (18) laughs and is already calling me gramps even though neither of my children have bred!

But I do have a wealth of knowledge in Permaculture. 2 design courses and a teachers Certificate in it plus hands on experience, and networks of folks whose knowledge and skill sets I trust to get a decent response from.

If you have a query or a request (I like requests best) about a certain plant or whatever about permaculture. Just include your Zone. I know how to navigate plant search engines better then I do google...Cheerio!

You corrected me. I had mentioned of the wild lettuce for pain in a different thread. I do thank you for opening my eyes. I was not aware.
One of my favorites is purslane. Good for you in that is has a good deal of vitamin C and E but must be careful of the oxalates?sp to not eat too much too often.
It is said to be a remedy for snakebite but I have not found out how yet.

Purslane rocks...but yes, it is a survival food not an everyday food because of the oxalic acid/oxalate content that give give people stones in parts of their bodies they do not want. Chewed up and applied to a burn as a 'spittle' (a wad that has been once chewed and held in ones mouth) it is amazing and I have seen the effects on a 3rd degree burn (my own) first hand.

The radio programs I listed above are good because both are very astute people, as is my friend Mike. Susun gets into how you actually make herbal teas and what not, and it is not what most think.

I think tomorrow I will really try and get into kudzu. The 'virulent and pestilent plague upon the South East'...meh...we will look deeper into that and see what we can see. Those are the best queries for me...specific plants. I did come up with this thread... Thread: GLP Is the New University

You have something to add to this thread, you add it. You have a query, I'll do my best to find it. Together we can make this a course since we are on the darn computer anyhow. Why not? If I can't find it, someone else here may have some insight. Together we will find it and anything 'out there' I can run through my friends filters since they are all plant people as well...they just allow me to have time which is all I ask.

Great information. It is good that we have such gifts all around us. I was delighted to learn of it's benefits. I assume it cools the burn as well because it is a succulent of sorts.

So chew purslane and spit it on burns, huh? Lance, how bad was the burn and what did the chewed purslane do for it, exactly, in what time frame? More than one chew and spit?

Loving this information, LookingInward and Lance!

You know my background a bit Pooka...so I was doing a Pagan 'Open Circle' and all the Bahais turned up. Like 200 of them...so as I was using an owls wing over a censor to smudge them, I dipped the tip of the wing into the bubbling and smouldering resin (I forget which one, copal maybe) and it splashed onto my arm burned through my robe and sat on my forearm. But I was in role.

That happened about half way through my smudging people. It was a 4th degree burn that kept blistering and then popping and then blistering and then popping. The purslane was applied by an old witch (kicked out of the army for being a trannie at the start of WW2 but with an honourable discharge!) who had grabbed a bunch when (s)he saw what was happening.

A mouthful of purslane that had been slightly macerated, cooled and healed the thing (I applied it as a regular poultice once it sopped bubbling) to the point that today, it is simply a spot on my arm that doesn't tan. Great stuff purslance!

Totally off topic - but nevertheless interesting, I think - armadillos like fire ants - favorite food, apparently, so armadillos have migrated northward with the fire ants, and are now in states we would think impossible to have armadillos!

I haven't tried this yet either because I found it just recently. I do hope it works. The only thing I have done that works is to wait until after a rain when they are busy rebuilding their hill. Take a propane torch and some kind of metal rod and incinerate them along with their eggs which are often found near the surface at that time also. Stir the mound in a circular motion so it churns things upward burning as you go. Watch your feet and burn any off the rod before the reach your hand. I have considered going out on a day when the temperature is below freezing, dig up a shovelful and sling it to break it up and freeze the monsters.

What is the point in the compost tea? What does that do against them?

Good question! Seems like the orange would be the thing that worked and I don't know what the tea would do, so you may be right - reclaiming the land instantly! What a great idea that would be! Wouldn't it be amazing if we could do the same with all damaged land - the clear-cuts, any damaged lands.

I'm dreaming, of course.

Opiates and civilization...
I do not know what the rules are here posting data like this because I do not normally do such things. But preppers are looking at wild lettuce as a pain reliever? Seriously?

What you want to do, is find a seed seller (the seeds are NOT illegal in the US nor Canada) who can provide Turkish white and perhaps has Tasmanian Blue. The Turkish white is bred for morphine production, the Tasmanian Blue (bet you didn't know that Tasmania provides most of the worlds codeine?) for codeine.

You find a barren space, you sew both of those then after they have crossed you introduce 'hens and chicks' papavers to that field the next year. Both the white and the blue are single headed and you do not want that. So in your third year you will have a cross of all three cultivars. High in pain killers.

You save a few of the larger pods of the now-multiheaded plants and you harvest the unripe ones and do a simple vinegar extraction (Ie soak and blend the pods in vinegar so it becomes a paste), then put the paste out in the sun to sun-bake the vinegar off. It tastes like crap, but it works and I'm allergic to all opiates aside from the raw form.

If you want a plant to be able to use after a, a, 'an event', papaver somniferum is a good one to get to know beforehand. And the end product will be worth it's weight in gold if it all goes doo-lalley. If you have ever seen a loved one in pain and wished you had the skill sets to do something about it other then put your loved one out of their misery you will know what I am talking about.

This wild lettuce BS on survival threads is ludicrous and I doubt one person has actually tried it for the most part. I have, it sucks. 1000000x weaker then the humble poppy extract.
 Quoting: Lance Roseman From BC

They grow poppies in Tasmania Op, paddocks full of them,
I used to drive past some of them every day, you can pull up and jump the fence and go pick them lol

The companies in Tasmania which extract the naturally occurring alkaloids from the poppies, like morphine and codeine, have slashed the production area they need.

The industry at its peak in 2013 had close to 900 growers in the state and that number has now halved.

Crop area has reduced from 30,000 hectares at its peak to around 10,000 hectares this season.
