The Guelphs are descended from the Welfs, one of the first Frankish Kings. The Guelphs were also the leading family in Venice, which the current govt of England is modeled after.

The d'Este family is descended from the Guelph. Another powerful family that is similarly named is the Welfen (they are current). I think the Welf/Welfen/Guelph/Guelf/d'Este are all from the same line.

There is a childrens story about the Guelphs vs the Ghibellines, which was a real battle in the 1100s for ultimate power, the Pope sided with the Guelphs and the Guelphs won.
