Superman the caped crusader was created in a time when capes were considered to be a sign of wealth, high fashion, and prestige not so much any more.

They wear capes, because capes are technically seen the hardest part to draw, so comics with capes need an expert artist, while normal comics can be drawn by amateurs.

You wear a cape to escape rape.
Rape comes from the word ape.
Apes eat alot of grapes and do alot of rapes.

So you need a cape to escape the grape eating apes or you'll get the rape.
