Quoting: Anonymous Coward 72597490 \ Despite protests from Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo and several lawmakers, Gov. Greg Abbott signed a bill into law Friday that will allow people without a handgun license to carry pistols in public — openly or concealed — for a week after a disaster is declared. “I don’t want someone to feel like they have to leave their firearms back in an unsecured home for a week or longer, and we all know how looting occurs in storms,” Phelan said in an interview in March. “Entire neighborhoods are empty and these people can just go shopping, and one of the things they’re looking for is firearms.” [link to www.houstonchronicle.com (secure)] . I was only 27 years old and was hauling limbs by myself from the yard to the street. A white van drove by several times. Then it parked and a man came walking into my yard. I went into the house and then stepped out onto the porch with my mini-14, which was gussied up to look like an urban assault weapon. I put the butt on the ground and leaned it over enough for the stranger to see it. He immediately halted, backed up to his van without turning around, and took off. I did not see him again. Even after all these years, I am certain he was up to no good. I guess I should mention that I am a woman. |
